The extremely compact size has been achieved in the same way as in the faster RF 70-200mm F2.8 version, i.e. the lens size changes when zooming. However, Canon has made the weather protection in the style of a belt and braces, i.e. all moving parts are properly sealed. The lens belongs to the L-series of professional equipment and is suitable for heavy use. In addition to the weather and dust-protected structure, the front elements are fluorine-coated. This coating repels dirt and makes cleaning easier.

The image stabilization is 5 stops in power and when combined with the EOS R5 and R6 bodies, the power becomes a whopping 7.5 stops. This combined power is one of the advantages of the RF mount, thanks to the fast data transfer, the body and lens talk to each other and get the most out of the devices.

Like Canon Pro lenses, the stabilizer has three different modes: 1. for general use, where stabilization works in all directions, 2. a more effective mode for panning, and 3. a mode that only activates the stabilizer when the shutter is pressed all the way down.

The Canon RF 70-200mm F4 L IS features two Nano USM focus motors, each motor moving its own focusing element. This makes the lens' autofocus very fast. When focusing on the lens, the focal length does not change much, so the so-called focus breathing phenomenon does not interfere with video shooting!

The lens has extensive controls for focus limitation, stabilizer control, and the programmable control ring familiar from the RF series lenses. With this control ring, you can, for example, change the aperture or correct the exposure.
