The Canon RF 70-200mm takes full advantage of the new mirrorless cameras and is the biggest change in the history of this type of telephoto zoom. At its widest position, the lens is surprisingly small, measuring just 14.6cm long and weighing just over a kilo . For comparison, the Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 III is over two centimetres longer and almost half a kilo heavier.
The compact size is possible because the closest lens elements are very close to the image sensor and the lens zoom is not implemented internally, meaning the lens changes size during zooming. However, the lens is mechanically of very high quality and is weather-sealed to the level of L-series lenses.
Although the Canon RF 70-200mm is the smallest and lightest lens in its class, there is no compromise on image quality. It uses several special lenses, aspherical and UD elements, as well as one Super UD element. The lens elements are coated with SWC technology, which minimizes flare and ghosting.
The lens' autofocus is promised to be very fast. For the first time, autofocus has been implemented using two separately operating Nano USM focus motors, which move different focus elements independently. This shortens the focusing distance of the lenses and reduces the so-called focus breathing phenomenon. The noise level is also kept under control with this focus system, making it great for video shooting.
The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 features CIPA-standard 5-stop image stabilization. The image stabilization has three different settings, and thanks to the new RF mount, the image stabilization function can be controlled together with the camera body.
