The Canon 24-70/2.8 lens includes image stabilization for the first time! However, the size of the lens is very close to the previous EF-series model without stabilization. Canon promises up to five stops of stabilization. The stabilizer uses the processor and gyro sensor in the camera body. The information is transferred to the lens via the fast data transfer enabled by the new bayonet, which adjusts the operation of the IS stabilizer. This technology helps especially to reduce low-frequency movement when handheld shooting takes as long as possible in low light. A tripod is of course optimal, but the photographer does not always get to choose the conditions and the picture must be taken even in difficult places.

Like other Canon RF lenses, the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS features a programmable zoom wheel (can be used to adjust aperture, exposure compensation, etc.). The lens construction consists of 21 lens elements in 15 groups. Three elements are aspherical lenses to reduce distortion. The lens uses a new type of Nano USM focusing motor, which is especially suited to the demands of video shooting. Focusing is handled internally by moving only one element, so focusing works quickly at all distances. This means that the size of the video image does not become disturbing during video shooting.
