The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM lens uses the new RF lens mount and works with Canon EOS R series mirrorless cameras. The lens's brightness and image quality are made possible by the new RF mount, which has a large diameter and comes close to the sensor.

Canon has tested this Canon RF 28-70mm F2 lens against the top-of-the-line EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II and the EF 24-70mm F4L lens, and according to measurements, at full aperture this new RF lens is even sharper than the old lenses. This is a great achievement when you consider the better light output of single and double apertures.

Due to the light output, the lens is large and weighs 1430 grams. On the other hand, for example, the Canon EOS R body weighs 660g with the battery, so in shooting condition, the weight difference between the body and this lens compared to the EOS 5D Mark IV and 24-70mm f/2.8 II lens is a reasonable-sounding 400g. The lens structure consists of 19 lens elements in 13 groups.

Many Canon special lenses are used, 4 aspherical, two UD lenses and one Super UD lens to reduce chromatic aberration. The lens has an ASC (Air Sphere Coating) coated lens element, this multi-layer coating technology reduces reflections and ghosting more effectively than traditional technologies. The difference between the coatings is especially visible in demanding conditions, such as when shooting against backlight and if there are bright point-like light sources in the image area. The front and rear lens are treated with a fluorine coating that repels dirt and makes cleaning easier.

The lens is dust and weather sealed like other Canon professional L-series lenses.

The Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L features a new type of programmable control ring. In addition to the zoom ring and focus ring, the lens barrel has a third control ring. This Multifunctional Ring allows you to control camera settings, such as exposure compensation or lens aperture. The focus ring can also be adjusted via the Canon EOS R body.
