Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a very fast lens for the new Canon EOS R cameras. The lens has been designed without compromises to take advantage of the new Canon RF mount. The rear lens elements are much larger and are located closer to the image sensor compared to the EF 50mm 1.2L lens. Although it is a mirrorless system, this lens is not designed for compact size, but for extremely good image quality. The lens weighs 950g and is clearly larger than the EF model. However, the filter thread is a reasonable 77mm. Like other Canon RF lenses, the 50mm F1.2L includes a programmable adjustment wheel (can be used to adjust aperture, exposure compensation, etc.). The large and tactile focus ring is also customizable, and the focus rotation direction can be adjusted via the camera (handy, for example, for Nikon photographers who have changed systems).

Because the EOS R's Dual Pixel AF focusing system works at the sensor level, it is absolutely precise. There is no longer any need for calibration tables and focus micro-adjustments like with SLR cameras, even with an extremely narrow depth of field at f/1.2. C

Completely new optical structure

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM has a 15-element structure in 9 groups. It uses special lenses such as three aspherical elements and one UD element to eliminate chromatic aberrations. The lenses are coated with Canon's SSC, and one lens has a new ASC coating. This multi-layer coating technology, introduced for the first time in the 100-400mm IS II lens, reduces flare and ghosting more effectively than traditional techniques. The difference between the coatings is especially noticeable in demanding conditions, such as when shooting against backlight and if there are bright point-like light sources in the image area.

The lens's 10 diaphragm blades are rounded, and special attention has been paid to beautifully defining areas outside of the focus area during the design phase. The Canon RF 50mm is therefore great for portrait photography and shooting with a fast aperture when you want your subjects to stand out from the background. The closest focusing distance is 40cm and the magnification ratio is 0.19X.

The Canon RF 50mm is dust and weather sealed according to L-series standards. Note: the lens requires a filter for weather protection! The reason for this requirement is the front lens element of the lens, which moves with the focus. The bayonet, the sides of the adjustment rings and the lens switches are sealed. In addition to the AF/MF focus switch, the lens also has a focus range limiter, which can be selected between the focus range or 0.8m - infinity.
