The Canon FR 35mm f/1.8 Macro is a versatile focal length lens for Canon EOS R series mirrorless cameras. The lightest and most compact of the Canon RF lenses released. The Canon RF 35mm f1.8 lens has a closest focusing distance of only 17cm, making it suitable for capturing details, and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:2. An example of this magnification ratio is a business card, at the closest focusing distance the card fills the entire image area.

The Canon RF 35mm includes five stops of effective IS image stabilization . A good f/1.8 aperture, a reasonable focal length, and effective image stabilization make this lens a great combination for shooting in low light without a tripod with the Canon EOS R camera.

Like other Canon RF lenses, the 35mm f/1.8 features a programmable control wheel that can be used to adjust aperture, exposure compensation, or the sensor's ISO, for example. The lens's construction consists of 11 elements in 9 groups. The lens takes full advantage of the new RF mount, with the rear lens element being large and very close to the image sensor, allowing the lens to be small while still delivering top-notch image quality.

Compared to the EF 35mm F/2 lens, the lens has been completely redesigned, the lens elements take up less space, focusing is handled by 9 front lens elements. There are more focusing elements, but these lenses weigh less, thanks to this, instead of a USM motor, the RF 35mm f/1.8 uses an STM focusing motor. With STM focusing, the focus shifts more smoothly, especially when shooting videos. Focusing is also almost silent.

Canon's own tests compare the image quality of the lens to the professional-grade EF 35mm f/1.4L lens, with very similar measurement results. The RF35mm loses out to the newer EF 35mm f/1.4 L II lens, but the price is significantly lower and the lens also has image stabilization.
