So what's completely new is the higher magnification, you can get even closer to the details of your subjects without using zoom rings. Autofocus also works across the entire focus range.

The big innovation is the SA adjustment. This adjustment ring controls the effects of spherical aberration, i.e. the softness and quality of objects outside the depth of field. This can be adjusted between -2 and +2. At the extreme position +2, the blurry areas in the foreground of the subject are drawn softly and the areas behind the subject have a whirring effect, the bokeh gets a slightly sharp edge.

At -2, the image outside the depth of field becomes silky smooth. This also has a slight effect on the overall sharpness, so this is very suitable for portrait photography, for example.

This effect is at its greatest at distances of 0.5 - 1m, in macro photography the image hardly changes at all.

At the highest magnification of 1.4X, the focusing distance is 26cm, which means there is about 8.6cm of working space between the subject and the lens. With a traditional 1:1 ratio, there is 11.2cm of space left.

The lens is weather-sealed to the same standard as the L-series. The lens has two focus motors, and the focus works over the entire range. There are also adjustments on the side of the lens to limit the focus area.

The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens weighs 730g, making it ideal for handheld shooting. It also features a very effective image stabilizer, which also works in conjunction with the body stabilizer. It also uses the Hybrid IS stabilization introduced in the EF 100mm F2.8L IS USM macro, which is especially helpful for close-up photography.

The stabilizer can be turned off for tripod use, but there is no dedicated IS mode for the panning function, so the lens automatically detects these situations!

A tripod adapter is also available separately for precise macro work.
