New Firmware released:
Don't let the small size fool you - this is Sony's new Cinema series camera for professional video production! The Sony FX3 features the same sensor, processor, and image stabilization as the Sony A7S III. It also adds features from the larger FX6 model, such as active cooling and a sturdy handle with XLR connectors. This is enough as a single camera for agile production companies operating in the Run & Gun style, and as a B-camera for even larger productions.
Those who know the Sony A7S III know that the video quality is okay. In daily work, good usability is also important and the FX3 tries to meet these requirements. The most important innovation is a certain nice CineAlta-style gray color, but there is more!
The power switch is on the back of the camera, and below the shutter button is a paperback-style control for controlling the power zoom. There is a tally light on the front, back, and side to show when recording is on.
Like the Panasonic S1H, the camera has active cooling with a fan, the fan is designed so that it does not affect the weather protection of the body. In critical situations with regard to noise level, the fan can be switched off completely, off during recording or made as quiet as possible. In initial tests, the fan has been found to be very quiet, meaning that it is not audible in the video under normal conditions.
The menu structure is newer, the same as in Sony's A1 and a7SIII bodies. In fact, the LCD screen is also physically the same, meaning the screen flips from side to front.
The camera controls have been fine-tuned specifically for video use, the joystick has been retained but moved above the camera for space reasons, and there is also a large rec button with a warning light next to it. The rear dial is marked with shutter speed, focus peaking and zebra adjustments as standard.
The HDMI port is naturally full-size. The memory card system is the familiar 2 CFEXpress + 2kph SDXC UHS-II combination slots.
The Sony FX3's body has plenty of 1/4' standard threads, which can be used to attach the included handle or cable strain reliefs, and would also be a natural place for, for example, a drone mount.
The Sony ILME FX3 comes with a camera handle that is basically the same as the Sony XLR-K3M, meaning it has two full-size XLR connectors (with 48V Phantom power) and one 3.5mm connector.
The handle also functions as a mixer. The audio is converted to digital format in the handle's own AD converter, and the audio data is transferred in digital format via the Sony hot shoe connector directly to the video file. This means that no additional cables are needed between the devices, and the most common sources of interference and noise are completely bypassed.
Thanks to the shared electronics, the image quality and color reproduction are identical to the A7S III body, meaning they can be used together nicely. The difference at the moment is the S-Cinetone color setting, but this will be coming to the A7 series as a software update later.
And yes, the Sony FX3 also takes 12-megapixel still photos.
Note: This product is not compatible with the separately purchased Sony 2-year extended warranty.
