More information about the campaign

This set includes a Sony XLR-H1 handle with mixer and XLR connectors.

The Sony FX2 is the latest addition to Sony's popular Cinema line of video-focused SLR cameras. This new camera features a 33-megapixel full-frame sensor, the manufacturer's latest autofocus, and a metal body designed for professional use, meaning it's durable and stays cool.

There's also a mechanical shutter, meaning photography is completely unrestricted, and a new vertically rotating electronic viewfinder, meaning you can rotate the viewfinder image and hold the camera at an angle for interesting angles!

Sony often borrows technology from different devices in its camera models, this FX2 is basically an FX3 but with a Sony A7 IV image sensor, including the AI processor familiar from the A1 II model for autofocus, and the viewfinder is a completely unique innovation.

And because these loan items are good cameras, the Sony FX2 is also a good option for professional use when combining photography and video.

  • 33 megapixel sensor
  • Mechanical and electronic shutter
  • 15-stop dynamic range, 51200 maximum sensitivity
  • Continuous shooting 10 frames per second
  • Sony's latest autofocus with automatic subject detection
  • Dedicated AI processor, up to 30% faster subject focusing compared to FX3 model
  • 4K video recording, oversampled from 7K images
  • 4K 60P video with Super35 crop
  • 4K 30P webcam function via USB-C connection
  • Metal frame with multiple attachment points, so-called cageless design
  • Active cooling with fan - unlimited storage
  • 5.5 f-stop effective image stabilization and Active / Dynamic Active Mode for video recording
  • Forward-swivel flip screen and 90-degree tilting electronic viewfinder

Sony FX2 - also great for photography?

As mentioned, the Sony FX2 features the same 33-megapixel sensor as the Sony A7 IV and a mechanical shutter, making it a great camera for photography. The FX30 doesn't have a mechanical shutter, and the FX3 has a 12-megapixel resolution, making it a much better camera for photography.

The camera sensor is a great combination of resolution and sensitivity, with a dynamic range of up to 15 stops.

The autofocus system uses Sony's latest system, which includes a separate machine-learning AI processor. In addition to simply recognizing body parts, the system can recognize and predict the movements of the person in the image using Pose estimation technology, so the focus system is ready to focus quickly, as if anticipating where the focus should be.

In addition to people, the system recognizes other objects:

  • Animals (you can choose birds or animals or both together)
  • Insects (butterflies, dragonflies, etc.!)
  • Cars/Trains
  • Airplanes

And the animals are no longer cats or dogs, meaning the same focusing features work well on very exotic wild animals or more domesticated subjects like squirrels and rodents.

The maximum continuous shooting speed is 10 frames per second.

The Sony FX2 is the first Sony camera to feature the same color profiles for stills and video. This means that images can be recorded in S-Log 3 format with the same Picture Profile color profiles as video. In other words, you can shoot video footage and stills in the same settings and process them identically. This means you get full-resolution still images with the same tonal range, for example for posters or for pre-production and image design.

Like Panasonic, the camera cannot yet use LUT files you have downloaded in photo mode, but this could be a good idea for future software updates.

Sony FX2 as a video device:

  • 4K 30P video recording (oversampling from 7K material!), without cropping
  • 4K 60P video recording (from 4.8K material), Super35 or approximately APS-C cropping
  • Unlimited duration for video recording
  • USB-C streaming directly through your computer's USB port in 4k 30P quality
  • S-Cinetone color scheme
  • Cine EI shooting mode
  • 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, S-Log 3 recording
  • 16bit RAW video via HDMI to an external recorder
  • Support for LUT files loaded into the camera
  • New AF features also work in 4K recording without limitations
  • Desqueeze on camera for 1.3 and 2x anamorphic lenses
  • Active and Dynamic Active modes in image stabilization
  • Digital audio connection and full-size HDMI

What is the image quality of the Sony FX2 in video? Since the sensor is the same as in the A7 IV, there's no need to wait for the tests to appear on YouTube - it's the same familiar and safe, i.e. realistically neutral in colors, very sharp thanks to oversampling of 7K material, and there's also some dynamics.

Because it is a higher resolution sensor and does not use a so-called stacked structure, the sensor's read speed is slower than, for example, the FX3. So if you take the term run & gun literally and start running with the camera, the so-called rolling shutter phenomenon will appear in the picture. But this does not happen any more than with the A7 IV or competitors' cameras with similar technology, and the problem is also not seen in calmer shooting or when shooting from a tripod.

Another thing that comes from the Sony FX2's sensor technology is 4K 60P video recording with cropping, using the same 1.5X crop as on the A7 IV.

The camera's internal processing has been changed, with slightly less noise reduction, meaning the image is more natural-looking and sharper. Noise reduction can be done in post-processing to your own taste, and of course, no additional image enhancement is done when recording RAW video externally via HDMI.

The camera's previously mentioned AI processor also helps with video-related functions, and the camera has features familiar from the A1 and ZV-E1 models for tracking and auto-framing.

Dynamic Active stabilization: this uses the same Clear image zoom technology and frames the image more, which means very effective digital stabilization. Great for fast-paced shooting when not using gimbals.

Framing stabilizer: Subject detection automatically keeps, for example, the person being filmed in the middle of the frame or at a desired position. When moving the camera or shooting while walking, the camera compensates for movements. The same feature also works the other way around: put the camera on a tripod and the framing automatically moves to follow the performer! This is like having your own camera operator directly in the camera.

Focus breathing compensation: Focus breathing refers to the disturbing change in focal length when the focus moves. When using Sony lenses, the camera compensates for this error and removes it from the final video file.

So overall, this is a versatile and good video device. The camera can be the number one camera for many in terms of features and image quality, and on the other hand, it can be edited seamlessly with more powerful Sony devices in larger productions.

Professional-grade sound with XLR handle

The Sony ILME FX2 comes with an XLR-H1 camera grip, which has two full-size XLR connectors (with 48V Phantom power) and one 3.5mm jack.

The handle also functions as a mixer. The audio is converted to digital format in the handle's own AD converter, and the audio data is transferred in digital format via the Sony hot shoe connector directly to the video file. This means that no additional cables are needed between the devices, and the most common sources of interference and noise are completely bypassed.

Cinema Line-level frame and usability

  • Forward-facing flip touchscreen
  • Programmable exposure compensation dial
  • Two memory card slots, one SD and one SD/CFExpress Type A combo slot
  • Rec button in a smarter location above the body
  • More robust thermal management with fan - no overheating
  • Photo and video mode selection via separate switch
  • NS. big 6 quick menu for the most common settings, also works simultaneously when using an external monitor
  • Repositioned connections according to the photographers' wishes, with as little in the way as possible
  • 90-degree tilting electronic viewfinder
  • Weatherproof construction

The frame is very similar to the FX3, but not identical. The FX series has a so-called cageless design metal frame, meaning it doesn't necessarily need a frame around it, the frame is metal and includes several standard-sized mounting points for accessories and handles.

The grip is slightly deeper, the button positions have been fine-tuned, meaning there are numbered buttons around the body in a cinema style that can be programmed to suit your own use. The joystick has been retained but moved above the camera for space reasons, and there is also a large rec button with a warning light next to it. The rear dial is marked with shutter speed, focus peaking and zebra adjustments as standard.

And yes: when using the viewfinder, it gives a bit of a Hasselblad feel. The viewfinder is also equipped with a larger folding cover that is more comfortable to use and provides better protection from stray light. Hopefully a similar mechanism will be used in future Sony models, the adjustable angle makes it incredibly easy to get different angles and you don't have to immediately switch to the rear screen.

The power switch is on the back of the camera, and below the shutter button is a paperback-style control for controlling the power zoom. There is a tally light on the front, back, and side to show when recording is on.

Thermal management is handled by a fan, and now the flex and air vents are of a sturdier quality, and according to the manufacturer, the video recording time is now unlimited, meaning reliability is professional-level. This is clearly a problem with the Sony A7 IV, for example, meaning that more can now be extracted from the sensor.

The HDMI port is naturally full-size. The FX2 includes a CFExpress Type A / SDXC UHS-II combo slot and a second SDXC UHS-II card slot.
