The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is the latest addition to Sony's flagship lens line. Aimed at professionals and those who value quality, the new telephoto lens is compatible with both full-frame (FE) cameras and smaller E-mount mirrorless cameras.

The industry has been moving towards lighter lenses for some time now. The G-master II series lenses have a solid feel and combine excellent imaging with an even lighter weight, which has been reduced by up to 20%. The excellent f/1.4 aperture combined with the familiar 11-blade diaphragm produces a beautiful bokeh effect that brings out the subjects in your shots beautifully.

XD linear motor

The G Master II series lens now features even faster and quieter focusing. The lens's faster focusing enables sharp images even when tracking fast or irregularly moving subjects. The lens supports 120fps shooting with the Sony A9 III camera body.

Built for professionals

As part of the G-Master series, the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II lens has a solid feel and a body material made of textured magnesium alloy, similar to the Sony a7 series cameras. The thick rubberized focus ring feels comfortable in the hand and makes working in cold conditions more comfortable. The new Nano AR II coating reduces reflections, flare and improves contrast and color reproduction in bright shooting conditions.

In addition to portraits, excellent in video

The new Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is ideal for video work. The lens makes it easy to make smooth focus shifts. With the aperture ring stepless, the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II lens has minimal focus breathing. With the Sony body, focus breathing compensation is also available.

The practical AF/MF switch on the side of the lens allows you to switch between autofocus and manual focus without having to go into the camera menus.

The lens has two programmable focus hold buttons and you can customize the button functions to suit your needs.

Dust and splash-proof

The FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II lens is dust and splash resistant. There are rubber seals at each joint. The front lens has a fluorine coating to repel dirt and grease, but we still recommend using a separate protective filter.

Handy

The FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is not the smallest of the lenses, as the new product is about 10.7cm long. However, the weight has been reduced from the 820 grams of the first series lens to 642 grams now. The external dimensions have also been reduced by 13%. In terms of appearance, the 85/1.4 GM2 is consistent with other GM series lenses, and despite its physical size, it fits well into a full-sensor Sony body (e.g. a9 III, A7 IV, A7S III). The lens has a good grip and can be handled even with gloves on.
