The Sony FE 200-600mm is the most popular focal length range for sports and wildlife photography. The Sony 200-600mm is a completely new super telephoto zoom for Sony's mirrorless cameras. It uses the latest coatings and a modern optical structure. The lens has also been designed with upcoming camera bodies as yet unannounced in mind, so the lens offers even faster autofocus and image quality. This focal length range is very popular with other manufacturers such as Tamron and Sigma, and finally Sony has an option without adapters.
Many Sony SLR cameras have EyeAF for animals, and this lens is fully compatible with the feature. Sony's 200-600mm focal length and fast intelligent autofocus developed for animal photography is a great combination!
The lens has an internal image stabilizer that works together with the body stabilizer to provide sharp images even when shooting handheld. The image stabilizer has three different settings, in addition to the basic setting, Mode 2 is a mode intended for panning and Mode 3 stabilizes the viewfinder image, which makes it easier to frame fast-moving subjects, for example in sports photography.
Lens structure
The Sony FE 200-600mm includes internal zoom, meaning you can change the size of the lens or change the focal length when changing it. This is a great feature for example when shooting handheld or using a camera tilt, because the center of gravity of the camera and lens is not very different when zooming. In addition, the lens's weather protection is more effective because the outer structure is the same compact package.
The optical construction consists of 24 elements in 17 groups, with five ED lens elements and one aspherical element. There are up to 11 diaphragm plates and they are rounded to ensure that out-of-focus areas are drawn as beautifully as possible. The outer lens surfaces are coated with a fluorine coating that repels water and dirt. This, combined with good weather protection, makes the lens a functional tool for even the harshest conditions.
The lens' filter thread is a reasonable size of 95mm.
Professional-level usability

The lens body has three Focus Hold buttons (3.), which in the normal setting lock the autofocus at the desired position, these buttons can also be programmed to start, for example, EyeAF. Speeding up autofocus by limiting the focus range is possible with the settings 2.4m-10m and 10m - infinity (8.). In addition to the previously mentioned image stabilizer setting selection, the lens has a switch that can be used to turn off the image stabilizer completely (9.). The tripod collar can be rotated and removed from the lens (4.).
The focus (2.) and zoom adjustment rings (1.) are a good size and have a firm feel. The lens has a strap attachment point, which is also included in the sales package (6).
The Sony 200-600mm OSS is compatible with Sony's teleconverters, with the 1.4X extender the focal length becomes 280-840mm. When using the Sony professional body a9, autofocus also works with the 2x teleconverter! This gives a focal length of a whopping 400-1200mm.
