Rode Videomic series products have been handy and popular, but if the sound quality is lacking and the NTG series XLR connectors are not found on system cameras, the VideoMic NTG is a great solution to these problems. In addition to the analog 3.5mm connection, the camera works as a digital microphone via the USB connection, which means that it can be connected directly to a computer for example for video voice-over or recording podcasts. This also allows for lag-free sound monitoring via the headphone connection. The USB connection is also available on the iPad when using a suitable adapter, so this works with Garageband, for example.

The Videomic NTG miniplug connection is also smart, it automatically detects whether you are using a camera or a smartphone and uses the correct contacts, meaning you no longer need TRS and TRRS adapters. Just plug in the microphone and the sound will work.

Like Rode's NTG series, the sound quality is very good, the sound is not colored in one direction or another, but is realistic. The microphone gain is infinitely adjustable, the sound level can also be adjusted to match the line-level input. The microphone also has a peak warning LED for excessively loud sound levels. The high-pass filter is available in 75Hz and 150Hz settings

The included Rode SM7-R Shoe Shockmount includes a hot shoe mount as well as a standard 1/4' tripod mount. This means that you can use a tabletop tripod for photography on your desk for podcasting or video calling.

The Rode Videomic NTG includes a 350mAh lithium battery that provides approximately 30 hours of use on a single charge. The microphone has a smart battery saving feature, so if the attached camera is not turned on, the microphone will not use power either.
