The Sony A7C is quite a combination. The size is the same as the small sensor A6600 model, the image quality is borrowed from the A7 Mark III camera and the autofocus is the same as the top model A7R IV. For those who are not familiar with Sony models, this can also be said in another way: this camera is very compact in terms of image quality and includes very effective autofocus.
The camera sensor has a resolution of 24.2 megapixels, the same as the A7 Mark III body. The burst shooting is also the same, recording 10 images per second.
The autofocus, on the other hand, surpasses the A7 III in terms of features, the features and speed are on par with the A7R IV and A7S III bodies. This means that there is real-time focus that recognizes a figure, face or eyes. This also works in video shooting. In addition, in photography, there is focus that recognizes and automatically follows animals (for example, cats and dogs).
The camera's 4K video is recorded using the entire pixel count of the sensor, meaning a 6K image is converted into a 4K video file. This supersampling technology results in a sharper image with less noise and aliasing than 4K video, which records, for example, the content of every other pixel in the video (and at the same time loses half of the image information!).
The Sony A7C supports the Hybrid Log Gamma video format, which allows compatible displays to display HDR videos correctly without post-processing. When shooting HLG video, it is possible to see the preview image corrected, meaning that the image does not look very gray and lacks contrast despite the wide tone range. The camera also records video in the extremely wide tone range S-Log2 and S-Log3 formats, which are suitable for post-processing
FullHD recording is possible at 120 (PAL setting 100) frames per second. The camera has a microphone and headphone jack. In addition to the traditional 3.5mm jack, the camera comes with Sony's digital interface for audio devices (for example, the digital microphone M-B1N ) which completely bypasses the most common sources of noise.
Sony A7C or A7 Mark III?
As you can see from the text above, this camera is very close to the highly popular A7 III camera. However, there are some differences. Due to the size, the viewfinder magnification is clearly lower, the resolution is at the same level, but if the image from the electronic viewfinder is important and you use manual focus, it is worth trying both cameras.Flash sync is possible with the A7C at a speed of 1/160, while the Mark III's fastest speed is 1/250. This may be important for those shooting with flash.
The Sony A7C includes one memory card slot (vs. two slots in larger models).
The Sony A7C has quite good controls for adjusting settings for its size, there are three adjustment wheels on the camera, but these are all thumb-operated. The biggest difference compared to larger Sony cameras is the lack of a joystick , meaning you have to move the focus point, for example, via the touchscreen (or rely on automatic subject detection).
And to recap the reasons why the A7C is better:
- Smaller size and lighter weight
- A smarter display folds forward from the side
- No 30min limit on video recording
- Updated AF software and focus in less light
The battery type has been adapted to the FZ100, which is the same as in all of Sony's new generation cameras. This offers very good battery life, with a full charge it can take 680-740 photos (depending on whether you shoot through the viewfinder or the screen). Charging is possible directly in the camera via the USB-C connection.
The Sony A7C is weatherproof.
