Sony FE 14mm F1.8 G Master Wide-Angle Lens

Sony has been releasing a lot of great prime lenses, and this new Sony 14mm F1.8 continues the same trend. It promises sharp detail, bright light, fast focusing, and edge-to-edge image quality that can withstand even the most rigorous scrutiny. And all this while keeping the weight and size under control!

For comparison, the Sony 14mm GM weighs 460g and is about 8x10cm in size. The Sigma Art series with the same aperture and focal length weighs 1170g and is a couple of centimetres larger.

These new lenses are full of special elements, there is one aspherical, two Super ED and 2 XA lens elements to reduce the coma effect (star photographers beware!). And according to initial tests, the Sony 14mm fulfills the manufacturer's promises, the image is very sharp at full aperture and across the entire image area.

The Sony FE 14mm includes familiar and easy-to-use buttons: The Focus hold button allows you to lock focus or activate focus features such as EyeAF. There is a large, coated focus ring for manual focus, and manual focus is linear, meaning it works great with follow focus systems.

Autofocus is handled internally by two XD linear motors, although this focal length is considered the choice for calm landscape and architectural photography, a 14mm lens and extremely fast autofocus are a delicious combination.

How about a fast-paced, close-up scene like a 90s skateboarding video, but now in 4K resolution and with pin-sharp AF at all times? The closest focusing distance is 25cm, which means you can get some pretty sharp angles.

Aperture can also be adjusted directly from the dedicated adjustment ring. For video shooting, the clicks on this ring can be turned on and off.

The lens belongs to Sony's top G Master series, meaning it is mechanically durable for professional use and weatherproof in construction. There is no filter thread for the wide focal length, but the outer lens element is coated with a coating that makes cleaning easier and repels dirt.

For example, there is a slot on the back of the lens for gel filters for an ND filter. The lens comes with a mold to cut the correct size filter film.
