The Sony 20mm F1.8 is a very popular wide-angle lens for Sony's SLR cameras. This lens is at its best when capturing wide landscapes. According to tests, the lens is very sharp, even at full aperture. This edge-to-edge image quality and good F1.8 brightness make the lens an interesting option for shooting the starry sky.

The lens is not based on older versions, but is completely new and designed for mirrorless and high-megapixel cameras. It uses several special lenses and advanced coatings.

The Sony FE 20mm features autofocus with fast XD focus motors. This is especially useful when shooting video. You can get very close to your subject and Sony's fast focusing keeps your subject sharp. In terms of weight (373g), this lens also works great with a gimbal stabilizer.

When taking photos, the wide focal length also makes manual focusing easy, for example, choose aperture 5.6 on the Sony A7 III camera. The lens has a mechanical aperture ring and you can choose clicks between settings or completely silent aperture adjustment for video. At this aperture, the hyperfocal focus point is at about 2.5 meters, so focus to this distance and the image will be sharp from 1.5 meters to infinity! In landscape photography, you can get the entire image sharp and spontaneous snapshots are always successful.

On the side of the lens is the Focus Stop button, familiar from the G Master professional series lenses, which you use to stop autofocus. This button can also be programmed for other functions, such as EyeAF eye focus.

In addition to sharpness, the image also contains very little, or almost no, color aberrations. At full aperture, there is some vignetting, or darkening of the edges, but this can be easily removed in image processing if desired. The small geometric distortion is also easily removed if the shooting is very precise architectural photography.

The Sony FE 20mm F1.8 is weather-sealed and features a dirt-repellent coating on the outer lens surfaces.
