Sony's new lens features a very rare 20-70mm focal length. This is the first of its kind and the closest equivalents are the Panasonic 20-60mm and Tamron 20-40mm.
What does this 4mm difference to the traditional 24-70mm zoom mean? A lot! At the wide-angle end, every millimeter counts and 20mm is about 17% wider. So with this you get that entire landscape or interior in your photos or when shooting video you can use active digital stabilization and the image will still be wide-angle.
This Sony FE 20-70mm is a great option as a single lens for video and photography. The focal length covers most of your needs.
In video and JPG images everything looks straight and there is no vignetting, but in raw images without profiles you can see distortion at the extremes. But as said, in Lightroom and Photoshop and other image editing programs this is eliminated with the standard settings. When the focal length, size and brightness are this exceptional, some of the optical correction is done in the camera body and this compromise is certainly worthwhile for most photographers!
The lens works great for video recording, Sony doesn't promise that this is parfocal, but the focus at different focal lengths is very consistent, meaning the focus stays on the same object even when the focal length varies from one extreme to the other. Focus breathing, i.e. the disturbing change in focal length when changing focal length, is also minimized. This means that you can zoom and do focus pulls without worry when shooting video!
Autofocus is top-notch, as with Sony's new lenses: silent, fast, and accurate. AF works flawlessly in both still and video, so you can focus on the content.
The Sony 20-70mm F4 is weather-sealed in construction, and features a dirt-repellent coating on the outer lens surfaces.
