Sigma 14mm F1.4 Art brings the night to life! The Sigma 14mm F1.4 DG DN Art is a completely new lens, the optical structure, meaning the image quality, is different and of course the image quality was also updated and it is the only 14mm F1.4 lens.
Sigma's materials talk a lot about stargazing, and this is at its best when photographing the night sky and the northern lights, but it is also suitable for all landscape photography. The lens weighs an impressive 1170g - the weight of the quality glass.
The brightness and at full aperture, very fine image quality captures stars and details from the entire image area, sharp and with minimal distortion. The focus ring is large and has a good feel. And once the focus is right, you can lock it! This feature is great for star photography where even the slightest change in focus affects the final result.
Does 1.4 vs 1.8 aperture make a difference? The difference is 2/3 of an aperture, so there is a difference in long exposures. In addition, at aperture F1.8, vignetting is reduced at a dim distance, meaning that the new lens gets more light to the sensor, so the benefits are not only in the larger maximum aperture.
A sturdy tripod collar is included, which can also be removed for handheld shooting. The tripod collar includes a normal quick release plate mount but is itself Arca-Swiss compatible , meaning you don't necessarily need a quick release plate at all and the mount is very sturdy. Using the tripod collar eliminates the need for a similar lever arm on the tripod head and, for example, the tracking motor is also easier to balance.
As with the previously released Sigma 20mm DG DN lens, the lens hood is designed to allow the use of anti-fog heating pads.
The Sigma 14mm F1.4 does not have a filter thread, but you can use cut-to-size gelatin filters as ND filters, for example, which have a locking attachment point in the lens bayonet. In addition, the lens filter has two storage slots for filters, meaning that delicate filter films stay clean and intact when you're on the go! Sigma has clearly listened to photographers when designing this feature.
