The Sony FE 12-24mm F4 is a professional ultra-wide-angle zoom lens from the G-series (G Lens). The lens is compatible with both full-frame and small-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. Despite its ultra-wide-angle focal length, the lens does not distort the image like a fisheye, but with its straight lines, it looks more natural to the eye.
The dust- and moisture-resistant SEL1224G is smaller, lighter and wider than its 'big brother', the GM-series FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM, a lens. Weighing only 565 grams, it weighs almost half as much as, for example, Sigma's 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art lens. Despite the lens's frame-like weight, the SEL-1224G has a high-quality feel and construction. The barrel body is made of high-quality plastic with thick rubber zoom and focus rings. The bayonet is metal and surrounded by a rubber seal, making the lens dust- and waterproof.
The AF/MF switch on the side allows you to switch between autofocus and manual focus without having to go into the camera's menus. The programmable 'focus hold' (Focus Hold (Fn)) button is conveniently located on the left side of the lens, within easy reach of your thumb. It is possible to assign the desired function to this button from the camera's menus, such as Eye-AF or one of many other options.
Autofocus is powered by Sony's Direct Drive Super Sonic Motor (DDSSM). Focusing is fast and nearly silent, meaning it's also suitable for video recording as well as still photography.
The optical construction consists of three Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) elements, one Super ED lens element, and four aspherical lens elements. All of these work together to combat fringing and chromatic aberration, maximizing edge-to-edge sharpness. A Nano AR coating keeps ghosting and flare under control, especially in backlit conditions.
Due to the domed front lens, the lens does not have a filter thread. However, if you want to use a ND filter, for example, the lens comes with a filter holder made by NiSi for disc filters.
