Sony's G Master level macro lens: super fast AF, 1.4X maximum magnification, weather sealed. Also compatible with teleconverters!

The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 is the first close-up macro lens in the G Master series. The G Master lenses aim to provide professional-grade construction and weather protection, as well as image quality suitable for the most demanding applications. This 100mm macro is a major upgrade in every way to the previous 90mm F2.8 G lens.
Sony's new macro lens is capable of greater than 1:1 magnification, meaning the maximum magnification factor is 1.4:1. In addition, the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 GM is compatible with Sony's 1.4X and 2X teleconverters!
With the Sony 1.4X extender, the maximum magnification is 2:1 and is equivalent to a 140mm F4 lens.
With the Sony 2X extension, the maximum magnification is 2.8:1 and is equivalent to a 200mm F5.6 lens
With teleconverters, you can get a completely new combination of lenses. Another advantage of using a teleconverter is that the working distance remains longer, meaning even timid insects can be captured and the camera is not shadowing the subject.
The Sony 100mm F2.8 G Master works great not only for close-up photography but also as a normal telephoto lens. This means it offers a reasonable F2.8 aperture and a focal length suitable for portrait photography, for example.
It features the latest Sony optical technologies, such as XA lens elements, which allow bokeh, i.e. areas outside the depth of field, to be drawn as beautifully as possible and not to distract from the image. There are 11 diaphragm plates and these are rounded so that the drawing remains smooth even when you stop down. But the lens is not a little pretty, i.e. like a real macro lens, the raw resolution is very high and the image is undistorted and suitable for accurate reproduction of objects and works of art.
The autofocus is also among Sony's best. Sony uses the same XD focus motors as in its telephoto lenses, and there are no fewer than four of these in one lens. This means fast focusing and no lag in responding to subject movement. According to Sony, the lens is 1.9X faster to focus than the previous 90mm version.
The Sony FE 100mm Macron's focus keeps up with the A9 III's 120FPS burst shooting. In addition to burst shooting, this speed is useful when the subject or the photographer is moving - the subject is always sharp. In video shooting, tracking also works at 240 fps
The latest coatings such as Nano AR Coating II are used and shooting is possible when the light is at its best, i.e. in the evening and morning - even against backlight.
The lens features OSS image stabilization, which also takes into account the focusing distance for stabilization. The system also works in conjunction with Sony's in-body stabilizers to minimize camera shake when shooting handheld.
When focusing, the size of the lens does not change, so this is somewhat of an exception to internal focusing. This has several benefits, the lens is better protected from the weather because a slide tube is not needed and the distance of the front lens from the subject remains exactly the same.
In addition to the speed mentioned a few times, the new focus motors are very quiet, meaning there is no extra noise on the video soundtrack and the most nervous subjects do not scurry away. For manual focus, the focus ring is pulled to the manual position and the focus is mechanical and precise.
In addition, the focus ring has distance tables marked directly on it, allowing you to quickly adjust the focus to the right hectare for fine-tuning. There is also depth of field information, allowing you to quickly estimate at what distance the image will be sharp.
The controls are extensive and include a focus compensation switch, focus range limiters, a programmable AF-lock button, and an aperture ring with aperture lock so you can turn off the clicks between aperture values.
In addition to the lens hood, the lens comes with a zippered, padded protective case for the lens.
Weather-resistant construction and mechanically durable as in the G Master series. Outer lens surfaces coated with a dirt-repellent fluoride coating.
