The second version of the Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens is the world's first 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with an internal zoom. It is also the lightest in its class, weighing just 675g, 130g lighter than its predecessor. The II version features a completely new optical design.
The biggest change is the AF, as the new II version uses an SSVCM voice coil motor. This means up to 5x faster autofocus and 40% faster scanning time at the telephoto end of the AF. Thanks to the new motor, the lens is also half as quiet as before.
Zoom and focus are now handled internally, meaning the lens size does not change. This means that in the future the gimbal no longer needs to be rebalanced and the follow focus systems do not need to be adjusted. Since there are fewer moving parts, weather protection is also better. Good news for videographers is that for the first time in Nikon, the de-clickable control ring is now also available, meaning the aperture ring can now be made infinitely variable.
Why the second version?
The Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is a lens designed for demanding professional and amateur use and uses the manufacturer's latest and best solutions. Some of these names are already a bit poetic, such as the Meso Amorphous Coat coating and the Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor focus motor. This is Nikon's first Zoom lens to use SSVCM focus motors. VCM focus uses magnets instead of gears to move the focus elements. This makes the movement faster and more precise than with traditional stepping motors. Focus correction can be started at any time, just by turning the focus ring.
The new Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is not a macro lens, but the new design still offers a 24cm focusing distance at 24mm and 33cm at 70mm. The focus distance can be limited to 33cm across the entire focal length range using the limit button on the side.
The new Meso Amorphous Coat is an improvement over Nikon's previous Nano Crystal Coat. In addition, the lens features Arneo Coating. The two coatings work together to protect and eliminate reflections from various directions.
In addition to the zoom and focus rings, the Nikkor 24-70mm S II features a programmable control ring. This additional control ring, located closest to the body, can be programmed to control functions such as aperture or exposure compensation. In addition to the ring, the lens has two programmable L-Fn buttons, the function of which can be selected from over 20 possibilities.
