Whenever a lens gets its own name, it's known for something very unique! The Nikon Z 135mm F1.8 Plena is a special lens suitable for professional portrait photography. And on the other hand, although the focal length is traditional for portrait photography, it is very successful in product photography, nature photography, both in the studio and in terms of light power, even outdoors in extreme conditions.
The size and weight are there, meaning the lens elements in the Plena are large, this achieves light reaching the sensor as directly as possible, meaning even at full aperture there is very little vignetting and the image quality at the edges can withstand very critical scrutiny. The lens's drawing circle is probably very large, but the solution has been found to achieve just the right kind of performance.
However, what is especially important in Plena is how the images look, meaning that in addition to the effortlessly created resolution and precision, bokeh, or objects outside the depth of field, are beautifully and softly drawn.
Nikon has released many great lenses for portrait photography for its mirrorless Z series cameras. The Nikon 50mm F1.2, the Nikon Z 85mm F1.2, and this Plena.
What these lenses have in common is a very high maximum aperture, excellent image quality even at full aperture and, as a result, a fairly large size. The image quality is so close to flawless that it is almost worth choosing a focal length that you like. Some features such as the closest focusing distance and thus the highest magnification vary, so if you are taking close-ups of wedding rings, product photos or, for example, flower photos at dusk, this may affect your choice.
The focal length of 135mm and the largest aperture of F1.8 mean a very short depth of field. The lens contains two STM focusing motors, and the focusing works precisely and, according to testers, is slightly faster than the 85mm lens. With Nikon's new bodies, eye focusing also works well, so in general, such a bright optic can also be used with moving subjects and when shooting handheld.
The focus ring is large and has a very good feel, making it suitable for precise work. The control ring allows you to adjust exposure, for example, and there is also a programmable Fn button on the side of the lens.
The lens is weather and dust-resistant in several areas, on par with Nikon's S series. The outer lens element is coated with a fluoride coating that repels dirt and makes cleaning easier.
