The Zeiss Conquest HDX is the latest model in the series, designed to be an honest premium binocular without the high price tag. The 10x magnification and 42mm objective lens are a classic combination that works for almost everything from birding to hiking and wildlife observation.

The HDX features Zeiss FieldFlattener technology to keep the edges of the image sharp. The entire image area remains sharp even with wide fields of view – not just the center.

Optical quality and low-light performance

The optical performance of the HDX series is built on three things. ED glass reduces chromatic aberration, or color error: the outlines of objects remain sharp and colors look true. FieldFlattener technology keeps the image sharp throughout the entire image area, even to the edges. Zeiss T* multi-layer coating, meanwhile, increases contrast and light transmission.

The twilight number of the 10x42 model is 20.5, the higher the number, the more details are distinguished in low light. The exit pupil diameter is 4.2mm, which works well both during the day and in the evening twilight. In practice: the binoculars work great for early morning bird watching or by water bodies at sunset.

Usability and ergonomics

The focus wheel has been praised by active enthusiasts, the adjustment movement is smooth and the accuracy is good. The eyecups are stepless and adjustable, so the binoculars are also suitable for use with glasses: the eye relief is 18mm. The diopter locks in place so that once adjusted, the setting remains secure and cannot be changed accidentally. The foldable lens covers remain attached to the binoculars during use or can be removed.

The magnesium body is rubber-coated, lightweight but durable for tough camping. The 10x magnification is an excellent choice when targets are often far away: birds on the edge of a distant wetland or wildlife at the edge of a forest.
When held in the hand, 10x magnification is more sensitive to vibration than, for example, 8x, so if you use the binoculars for long periods of time or observe from a fixed position, a tripod adapter and a tripod stick may be a good purchase. The binoculars use common 1/4" tripod adapters.

Zeiss Conquest HDX series

The HDX series includes 8x32, 10x32, 8x42, 10x42, 8x56, 10x56 and 15x56. The Conquest HDX 8x42 is also an excellent all-rounder, more stable in the hand and better in low light thanks to its larger exit pupil, but the 10x42 is the most versatile choice in the series when targets are far away and accuracy is key.
