Tamron's new 17-28mm lens follows in the footsteps of the hugely popular Tamron 28-75mm . The design is based on brightness, smart size and weight, and of course image quality. Both Tamrons are designed specifically for Sony's full-frame mirrorless cameras, meaning they are not SLR lenses with an adapter glued on.
The lenses make a smart pair for photography and video projects. The filter thread is the same 67mm , so you can change filters and lens caps directly between the lenses. Both are lightweight (the 17-28mm weighs only 420g ) and with the 3-axis stabilizer you can change lenses directly without even rebalancing.
The optical construction consists of 13 lens elements in 11 groups. Several special lenses are used, such as three aspherical, two LD and one XLD distortion-correcting element. With the help of special lenses, color shifts and distortions are kept well under control. The lens is great for demanding landscape photography and is also suitable for photographing buildings and architecture.
The lens uses the same RXD focusing motor as the Tamron 28-70mm. Tamron lenses are also compatible with Sony's Eye-AF focusing! Manual focus correction is also possible when using autofocus, the lens supports Sony Direct Manual Focus. The closest focusing distance is 19cm at the wide-angle position.
Comprehensive compatibility and great image quality make the lens an alternative to Sony's own top-of-the-line G Master series lenses if your goal is to have the lightest (and most affordable) photography equipment possible.
The Tamron 17-28mm focuses and zooms internally, meaning the lens size does not change with use. This also makes the weather and dust protection more effective. The outer surfaces of the lens are coated with dirt-repellent fluorine.
