The RØDE VideoMic is a condenser microphone. It is designed for use with DSLR cameras, DV camcorders and small recorders. Rycote Lyre vibration isolation effectively isolates the microphone from interference that can interfere with recording. The built-in Rycote Lyre vibration isolation isolates the VideoMic capsule and electronics from the all-metal shoe mount. This effectively minimizes external, physical interference such as hum and vibration. The thermoplastic material does not fatigue or break and can withstand temperatures from -35 degrees to +40 degrees.
The standard-sized shoe mount also has a 3/8' thread at the bottom for easy attachment to a boom or tripod. (Note that special-mount cameras require a separate adapter.) The highly directional supercardioid polar pattern focuses on recording the subject directly in front of the camera, minimizing ambient noise.
The microphone's own 40Hz-20kHz response can be modified with an 80Hz high-pass filter. This removes unnecessary hum and rumble from the sound, for example, from air conditioning and traffic. The -10dB and -20dB level attenuation (or PAD), which can be selected from inside the battery compartment (9 V battery, not included), makes it easier to record loud subjects such as live music or motor racing. The microphone can withstand 134 dB SPL sound pressure.
