The Nikon Z6 II combines photo quality and video capabilities in a smart package. The viewfinder is large and precise, and the usability is guaranteed Nikon quality, so the camera feels immediately familiar when you use it.

  • 4K UHD video from the entire sensor area , 120P FullHD slow-motion videos
  • Coming later as a free update 4K 60P video (APS-C cropped)
  • Charging the battery directly in the camera via the USB-C connection
  • Compatible with older Nikon lenses with adapter

Nikon also released a sister model, the Nikon Z7 II, at the same time. The biggest difference between the cameras is the resolution of the sensor. The Nikon Z7 has a 45-megapixel sensor, but the Nikon Z 6 is faster in burst shooting and 4K video is created from the entire sensor area using all pixels. The differences between the bodies are presented in the following table:

Nikon Z6II Nikon Z7II
Cell 24.5 megapixels 45.7 megapixels
Sensitivity range 100-51200 64-25600
Series shooting: 12 frames per second 9 frames per second
Video: 4K video with all pixels recording 4K subpixels or cropping

Otherwise, the bodies are similar, the body design and usability and features are the same. The difference is very much the same as in Sony's mirrorless cameras a7 III vs. a7 R Mark III.

Better autofocus

The biggest change in the Nikon Z6 II model is the faster and more feature-rich autofocus. The big changes have been achieved by adding a second Expeed processor to the body. One of these processors handles only focus-related functions.

The animal autofocus and EyeAF that came as an update to the Nikon Z6 model have also been updated to be better. Now you can select the desired area more precisely, previously this feature worked in the entire image area and could not affect the focus object.

Autofocus now also works better in low light, focusing locks at -4.5 EV, i.e. one stop darker, and the Low light mode, which affects focus speed, gets an additional stop of power.

Because the focus works at the sensor level, it is also accurate, meaning that the focus of the lenses does not need to be adjusted or calibrated. The focus points fill about 90% of the field of view, which is clearly more than in similar mirrorless bodies. For the first time in Nikon system cameras, the image stabilizer works internally in the body. The stabilizer is a modern 5-axis sensor-moving stabilizer and the stabilizer is promised to have five stops of power. The internal image stabilizer also works together with the lens image stabilizers and also with the Nikon FTZ adapter when using old lenses! The adapter can also be purchased as a package with the camera.

Electronic viewfinder - also faster

The viewfinder's electronic and optical features are the same as the previous model, but Nikon says the image will darken more quickly when taking a picture. This is especially useful when shooting in burst mode. In addition, the viewfinder has less lag, making it easier to track fast and irregularly moving subjects.

The Nikon Z 6II's electronic viewfinder displays 100% of the image. The viewfinder contains 3.69 million dots and has a magnification of 0.8X , so it is very accurate. The viewfinder's optics, viewing angles and design are designed for long-term use and will not unnecessarily strain the user's eyes or cause loss of concentration when shooting. The outer glass element is also coated with a fluorine coating to repel dirt.

The benefits of an electronic viewfinder include customizability, allowing you to adjust camera settings and browse quick menus without having to take the camera off the shooting position, and immediately seeing how adjusting exposure or changing white balance affects the image. The electronic viewfinder also enables manual focus assistance by emphasizing outlines (Focus Peaking) and overexposure warning (zebra).

A tool also for video productions

The Nikon Z6 was popular with videographers, and this second version will be no different. The Nikon Z 6II records video using the entire pixel count of the sensor, meaning a 6K image is converted into a 4K video file. This results in sharper images with less noise and aliasing than 4K video, which only uses a portion of the pixels.

Later, the camera will also be available as a free update with 4K 60P recording with 1.5X zoom!

In the Z7 II model, some pixels are dropped from 4K video or the video must be DX cropped for use. Also, the so-called Rolling Shutter phenomenon that occurs in fast movements is slightly greater in the Z7 version.

In addition to the wide-gamut N-log setting, videos can be recorded in 10bit HLG HDR format. This is ideal for professionals who want to define the color and contrast of their footage themselves. N-Log gamma and 10-bit 4:2:2 color depth videos are available when recording to an external recorder (via HDMI).

In addition, after a separate and paid upgrade, the recorder also has 12bit 4K Raw format (line skipping enabled, i.e. supersampling does not work in this mode).

Internally, the camera records 8-bit video to the memory card at a bit rate of about 144mbps, and there is also a Flat color mode that can be adjusted faster than N-Log to make video editing easier. FullHD videos can be recorded at a frame rate of 120P, so slow-motion videos look great with the camera. In addition to the body stabilizer, videos can be stabilized with electronic (e-VR) image stabilization.

Same great Nikon usability

The Nikon Z6 and Z7 received a lot of praise for their user interface and controls, meaning there were no odd touch bars and no skimping on the number of buttons.

The Nikon Z 6 II continues the same series and despite the increased power, the camera body is almost the same gram for gram. So if you leave an older camera as a second body, for example, using it is completely seamless. Additional parts such as SmallRig frames also go with this camera.

The usability of the Z-frames is guaranteed Nikon quality. Although the frame itself is small, attention has been paid to ergonomics. The handle part of the frame is shaped a little more traditionally compared to other manufacturers, so it is also safe to handle the camera with one hand. The buttons and switches on the frame are larger and adjusting the camera settings is possible even in the coldest winter weather using gloves.

The camera has an LCD screen on top that consumes little battery and clearly displays settings. The body is also weather-resistant to the same level as the mirrorless D850. The camera's menus and user interface are very similar to those of Nikon's previous bodies, so experienced Nikon users will feel at home with the body.

The Nikon Z6 Mark II supports modern data transfer via WiFi and Bluetooth . Nikon SnapBridge not only transfers images but also acts as a remote shutter release for the camera .

The camera's battery is the latest EN-EL15C version, this battery can be charged directly via the USB-C connection on the camera. The battery capacity is also better than the previous version. With a full charge, the number of shots is promised to be approximately 420, using the monitor.

Tuote tuntuu vastaavan teknisiin ominaisuuksiinsa. Vähän on vielä kokemusta kamerasta, mutta testaus jatkuu. Optiikkana on tällä hetkellä pari DX kakkulaa.
