The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 is a completely new lens optically, with a completely different design than the Nikon AF-S 50mm F1.8 lens for F-mount SLR cameras. It uses more special lenses such as two aspherical elements and two ED elements. And this is also reflected in the image quality.
The Nikon Z Nikkor 50mm is a modern lens for high-resolution full-frame mirrorless cameras.
DPReview.com gave the lens a Gold Award in their review, commenting that image quality is very good at full aperture and practically flawless at most common settings. Image quality is very good at the edges of the frame and the lens performs very well in difficult backlit situations, keeping reflections to a minimum.
The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 S, with its very simple and straightforward appearance, is a fast normal lens for Nikon Z-mount system cameras. The lens' focusing system causes very little if any focus breathing, i.e. changes in image size when focusing.
Like the Nikkor Z 35mm lens, the control ring is programmable. The default function is manual focus, but you can also program the ring to adjust aperture, ISO sensitivity or exposure compensation, for example. In manual focus mode, the focus speed is determined by how quickly or slowly you turn the ring. The focus ring is also suitably damped and has a good feel. This allows for really subtle focusing at best.
The only niggle with the Nikkor Z 50mm lens is the switch on the side that switches between autofocus and manual focus.
The optical construction includes two aspherical elements and two ELD elements to reduce chromatic aberration. Nano Crystal Coat reduces flare when shooting against backlight. The weather-sealed lens has a fluorine coating on the front lens element to help repel water, dust and dirt. There is a protective rubber seal around the lens mount.
