This lens is the most traditional pair for Leica cameras after the 35mm focal length. And what's more, it handles both portraits and general mood shots. The Summicron version means excellent image quality at full aperture and a compact size.

This Summicron-M is in a way the basic, uncomplicated model, meaning it doesn't have an aspherical element or the special features of the APO version. But the recipe is a traditional optical structure and top-class mechanical quality, meaning the image is sharper from edge to edge for even the most demanding photographer, and in addition to sharpness, the out-of-focus areas are beautifully smoothed. There's nothing special to say about the lens, it works and makes beautiful images decade after decade.

For those used to DSLRs, the Summicron 50mm is almost graceful. But the usability has been honed over the decades to perfection. The aperture control, the feel of the focus ring, and the built-in lens hood feel familiar and work excellently.
