Leica's 50mm Summilux is a classic. The recipe is the same, but with a compact size, high-intensity depth of field, and a very versatile focal length.
This 2023 model features a new optical design! Three of the lens elements are new, which according to the manufacturer improves sharpness and edge definition, meaning you get even more detail from the M11 body. The shortest focusing distance is now 40cm (previous version 70cm). The number of diaphragm plates has increased from seven to eleven. In addition, the retractable lens hood is now integrated directly into the lens.
Focusing between 70cm - infinity works like all Leica lenses and the focus is transmitted to the rangefinder. When focusing closer than this, there is a small response when turning the focus ring, the connection to the rangefinder is lost and a whole new world of close focus begins up to 40cm. In this case, focusing is handled using the rear screen's liveview viewfinder, the Visoflex electronic viewfinder or the Leica FOTOS program.
The front three lens elements contain slightly different material and shape, the aspherical element and the FLE lenses are the same as in the previous model, so the improvements here are bigger than in the 35mm Summilux. According to initial tests, the APO Summicron-M is still naturally the raw resolution champion, but now this Summilux is approaching this reference level, especially in edge definition.
For someone used to DSLR cameras, the Summilux 50mm F1.4 is surprisingly small considering its light output. This 2023 model is 7mm longer and 5mm wider than the previous one, and includes the integrated lens hood familiar from the new 35mm version. Otherwise, the optical body has not been changed, so the mechanical quality is convincing, the focusing is sensitive and the focus tab helps you focus very quickly. The aperture adjustment is also clockwork-like. Made in Germany
