The MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x is a macro lens for special needs, with a magnification factor of 1-5x without any additional equipment. The lens is suitable for photographing very small objects. The magnification of the lens starts from 1:1 true macro and always ends at 5x magnification . The amount of magnification is also marked on the lens barrel.
The lens is manual focus. The focus and magnification ratio depend on the distance to the subject. At 1:1 magnification, the working distance from the subject is approximately 100mm, at 2x magnification the distance is 63mm and decreases to 41mm when using 5x magnification. Focus and usable magnification are therefore linked to each other and the lens does not have a zoom mechanism to adjust the magnification. In principle, a convenient way to shoot is to decide on a magnification suitable for the subject and focus directly by moving the camera. Despite its small size, the lens comes with a tripod collar to make working easier, and due to the shallow depth of field, focusing is much easier using a support.
When shooting at these extreme magnifications, the depth of field is quite shallow. When the lens aperture is stopped down, the magnification also affects the amount of light reaching the sensor. The lens has a filter thread that can be used with Canon close-up flashes. MR-14EX and MT-24EX. Another option is to connect an external flash to the camera with a Canon OC-E3 cable. You can then add a softbox to the external flash to soften the light.
The Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x is truly a lens for special situations, but a careful user can create very unique images.
