The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS III completes Canon's update of professional zooms to meet the demands of new high-resolution DSLRs.

The Canon 70-200 2.8 is a professional's basic tool and externally the lens has only received minor cosmetic changes (e.g. brighter white color stacking). The focus ring and zoom are located in the same familiar place. The basic optical structure, such as the number of elements (23, 19 in groups) and the exotic special lenses have also remained the same (5 UD and 1 fluorite).

The most visible innovation in the lens is the ASC (Air Sphere Coating) lens coating . This multi-layer coating technology, first introduced in the 100-400mm IS II lens, reduces flare and ghosting more effectively than traditional techniques. The difference between the coatings is especially noticeable in demanding conditions, such as when shooting against backlight and if there are bright point-like light sources in the image area.

As befits a professional lens, the 70-200/2.8 is dust and weather sealed . Weather sealing can be found on the lens's aperture, zoom and focus rings, and around the bayonet. In addition to the weather protection of the body, the front and rear lenses of the lens have received a fluorine coating. This coating helps repel dirt and makes it easier to keep the lens surfaces clean of water marks and oil residues (goodbye to those annoying fingerprints on the rear lens).

The lens features IS image stabilization with panning function. The image stabilization performance is the same as in the previous II version, but due to stricter requirements, the power is now stated to be 3.5 f-stops (the previous one was stated to be 4 f-stops in the advertising texts). Naturally, the new 70-200mm f2.8 is compatible with Canon's 1.4 and 2x teleconverters and zoom rings.
