The previous Canon 70-200/F4 was announced ten years ago, and this new version borrows a lot of technical innovations from other Canon L-series lenses: the 70-200/4 IS II is now more durable, includes more advanced coatings and better image stabilization. The lens has required a comprehensive change, ten years ago the number of megapixels on a basic camera was significantly lower than on modern bodies. The affordable price, good image quality, compact size and lightness have remained unchanged.

Canon has completely revamped the lens' image stabilizer, the processor, motion-sensing gyro and software have also been updated. The Canon EF 70-200 II's image stabilizer is promised to have a power of 5 f-stops , this power has also been announced according to more stringent CIPA tests than the previous model, meaning the difference is very noticeable in use. The image stabilizer is also quieter than before, now there is no hum during quiet parts of the video. The image stabilizer has also received a new panning setting, which makes it easier to take impressive panning photos. The stabilizer keeps the subject of the image as sharp as possible and the background looks dynamic when the camera moves. This function can be found in some newer cameras such as the EOS 6D Mark II.

The autofocus has been upgraded to be faster and the focus motor is a ring-type USM ultrasonic motor. Manual focus correction is also possible in auto mode. The lens has internal focus and does not change its size or move the filter thread when focusing (making it easier to use a polarizing filter, for example).

The lens element coatings have also been updated, so images have less ghosting and reflections from strong light sources. Note: The filter thread size has also changed to a larger 72mm!

The minimum focusing distance is now 1m (previously 1.2). The focusing distance can also be controlled with compatible telephoto lenses. The Canon EF 70-200 f/4 IS II USM is naturally also compatible with Canon's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The short focusing distance combined with the new nine-blade diaphragm allows for images with a beautifully soft background. You can make the subject stand out from the background better than before and the blurred objects in the background appear rounder.

The Canon 70-200 F4 has been redesigned to be more mechanically durable. In addition to structural durability, the lens coating is now brighter white and more wear-resistant. The focus ring is wider than before to improve usability and the zoom ring has been shaped slightly wider (the lens sits more firmly in the hand). The Canon 70-200/4 is weather-sealed : the lens has seals that protect against moisture and dust. Like the new 70-200 f/2.8, the front and rear lenses are now coated with fluorine, which repels dirt and makes cleaning the lenses easier.

The Canon EOS 70-200mm F4L IS II USM is compatible with the AII tripod thread.
