The Canon EF 400mm F4 DO IS II USM is a compact and lightweight super telephoto lens. The lens is 23cm long and weighs just 2100 grams. The exceptional weight savings and small size have been achieved by using the advanced DO (diffraction optics) lens element in the lens structure. The EF 400mm is the first Canon lens to use the new third-generation DO element. Canon DO lenses can be identified by the green ring around the lens (vs. the red ring on L lenses.)

This latest II version of the lens has been completely redesigned in other respects as well, with more effective image stabilization and a big leap in image quality. The image is sharper, flare is minimized and contrast is better. The focal length combined with the f/4 aperture allows for a very shallow depth of field. The Canon EF 400mm f4 DO has nine rounded diaphragm blades, so out-of-focus areas are beautifully soft.

The Canon EF 400mm DO II is also comfortable to use handheld. The lens is smaller than a traditional 400mm super telephoto, even when using the teleconverter . The proportions are a bit confusing, and the 400mm DO feels lighter than you might think. The photographer can react quickly to events on the sports field or in nature, as the lens can be quickly raised to the shooting position. The Canon EF 400mm DO also travels in the protective carrying case that comes with the airplane's hand luggage.

Handheld shooting is also aided by a new four-stop IS image stabilization . The image stabilization has three different modes: the first is used for shooting stationary subjects, the second for panning, and the third for capturing fast action (the stabilizer then makes it easier to keep the subject framed in the desired way). According to today's demanding measurement method, the IS of the previous I version of the lens was only one stop effective.

Fast and reliable autofocus

As with other new super telephoto lenses, autofocus is precise and fast. A ring-type USM focusing motor is used, and fine-tuning of focus is possible at any time. There are also convenient Focus Preset and Focus Stop controls. The new focusing motor also enables extremely smooth Power Focus focusing, with two focus speeds in both directions and focus movement via the Focus Preset switch. This mode is particularly useful for video shooting.

The focus limiters are adjustable to the ranges 3.3m-8m, 8m-infinity and 3.3m-infinity. By limiting the focus distance, it is possible to reduce the search for the subject and thus speed up the focus even more. You can also prevent autofocus search using the Focus Stop buttons on the tip of the lens, this is especially convenient when using AI-servo continuous focus if you want to limit the focus point of the subject to the side. The lens's closest focus distance is therefore 3.3 meters. When photographing small subjects at close range, it is also possible to use telephoto rings.

The EF 400mm F4 DO II is also compatible with Canon's 1.4X and 2X teleconverters. Using the 1.4X extender, the focal length becomes 560mm and the maximum aperture is F5.6, while with the double teleconverter, the equivalent values are 800mm and F8.

The Canon EF 400mm F4 DO IS II USM is dust and weather sealed to the standards of L-series lenses. Together with the weather-sealed body, the combination can withstand use in harsh conditions. Both the front and rear lens elements are treated with a fluorine coating to repel dirt and water. The tripod collar is an updated version, switching between portrait and landscape images is easy and the lens clicks into place in 90-degree increments, so you can directly attach the camera to a tripod even in low light.
