Canon EOS R5 and other new products in first test

Julkaistu 30.07.2020 (Päivitetty 13.01.2025)
A professional photographer's opinion and experiences after their first shooting session with the EOS R5 body.

Warning: this video is full of action! We left out the colored lights, sound effects and stills. The goal was to make an honest video about the new camera after its first wedding shoot. Including both the pros and cons and a comparison with the EOS 1D X Mark III body.

We are a camera store and we sell cameras , but the opinions of these professional photographers cannot be changed even by paying, and the test camera was also purchased from us as normal.

Thanks to Mikko Kankainen for the video. Mikko works extensively in Mikkeli and the entire Savo region. The website can be found at https://kankainen.org/

Update 4.8: First impressions of the Canon EOS R5 - Animal Tracking AF.

iTR AF X Animal tracking AF in its first test. Here, the closest swan to the Camera Shop was the test subject, we didn't wait for the snow to be over and took boring posing photos.

We knew the feature worked because it recognized Finnish waterfowl from the nature photos hung on the walls of our store, but the focus response speed still surprised us positively! This focus mode works for both video and still photography. The Canon EOS R5 we used was the production version, with a Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS II lens. Image captured with an Atomos Ninja V recorder directly from the camera. The same focus system is also used in the Canon EOS R6 camera.

First impressions taken! Canon came to show off new bodies and lenses at our store. The feel was great, it feels like an improved EOS R body and really solid in the hand. The new controls, i.e. the joystick and several adjustment wheels, fit well and the use in that respect is similar to, for example, the EOS 5D IV body.

These pieces were Canon samples, meaning we are not allowed to share the images, but the bird's eye recognition worked at least for the Finnish waterfowl in the nature photos on the walls of the store! We will try this out in the form of a test video as soon as possible.

The new RF 100-500mm lens was also very convincing and there are high expectations for this lens. The picture also shows the new 1.4X teleconverter, notice the lens element reaching further. Because of this, with the teleconverter the lens must have a focal length of at least 300mm. It's a shame if situations change often, but Canon has sought the best possible image quality with these new extenders (also with the 2X version!) and with this optical structure the goal has been achieved.

The surprise lens RF 800MM F11 is lightweight, the center of gravity is so close to the body that shooting is possible almost with one hand (note, we do not recommend this). We also tried the lens with a teleconverter and the aperture is on par with a grandfather's SLR, but the performance of this set may surprise many. Thanks to the DO lenses, the light transmission is better than with a SLR, it comes with AF and an effective stabilizer. This could become a popular set for wildlife photographers.

The EOS R6 was also in the test, but deliveries of this body will start later, at the end of next month. It is a camera that is perfectly suited to the slightly blurring nature: a 20-megapixel image sensor borrowed from the EOS 1D X III, 8-stop image stabilization, up to 20 fps continuous shooting, and the same autofocus that finds birds in the image.

We will organize a trial event as soon as the situation allows and the plan is to get a large number of long tubes and both bodies from Canon to test out in the wild! If you would like information about this event, we recommend subscribing to our newsletter.

Note: Canon EOS R5 deliveries have started and cameras have already been delivered to customers. Availability is currently difficult and Canon cannot estimate delivery times, but we are going through the subscriber list in order. If the R5 and other new products are on your purchase list, it is worth getting in touch, the great EOS R5 memory card deal (CFexpress 256GB or 512GB card included) is still valid until tomorrow!
