Sony's 70-200mm F4 G OSS is a lighter and more compact alternative to the fast Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master. The lens is designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras like the Sony a7 and a9, but also works with the Sony Nex and a6500, providing a 105-300mm telephoto zoom.

The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS is similar in usability to the top G Master models. The lens is robust in construction and is dust and weather sealed to withstand professional use .

The lens has a focus selector switch, but manual focus correction is also possible in automatic mode. The feel of the focus ring is damped and precise, as is typical of Sony's quality optics. Focus can be limited to a range of three meters to infinity, which usually speeds up autofocus speed if the subject is a little further away.

The image stabilizer can be turned off when using a tripod, and the settings include Mode 1 and 2. Mode 1 is for general use and 2. is a special so-called panning setting for tracking movement. Around the lens, there are focus lock buttons found on advanced super telephoto lenses from other manufacturers, pressing the button locks the autofocus. In Sony cameras, this switch can also be programmed for other functions, such as the extremely convenient EyeAF eye-detection focus mode.

The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 represents modern lens design, with no fewer than 21 elements in 15 groups. Two of the lenses are ED elements that reduce distortion and one is a Super ED special lens, with a total of three aspherical lens elements in the lens. The lens uses a Nano AR anti-reflection coating. There are 9 diaphragm blades and they are rounded , so that objects outside the sharp area are beautifully soft, for example in portraits.

The lens diameter is 8cm and the length is 175mm, the size does not change when zooming or focusing. Due to the internal focusing, the front lens does not rotate and the use of a circular polarizing filter is also easy. The Sony 70-200mm also comes with a tripod collar.
