The Sony ECM-M1 is a very versatile on-camera video microphone. The sound capsules are in the shape of a diamond, and you can choose between stereo sound and different directional patterns directly on the device!
The microphone is designed for Sony bodies and requires a Multi-interface hot shoe to work, in addition, on newer Sony bodies such as the A7 IV the mic acts directly as an AD converter and transfers the audio to the video file digitally. This direct connection eliminates many sources of noise and interference and requires no cables at all.
Additionally, with devices that support a digital connection and four recording channels (such as the Sony FX30), the camera records omnidirectional sounds on the third channel so that the directionality setting does not affect the sound, and on the fourth channel at a -20dB sound level, the so-called safety channel, meaning that even loud sounds do not go overboard.
It features digital background noise filtering to reduce distracting sounds such as wind or electrical noise.
The Sony ECM-B1M includes a variety of adjustments, with eight different sound patterns , volume adjustments, and low-frequency cut and boost. Patterns can be changed directly from the dedicated dial.
Who is the Sony ECM-M1 suitable for?
You can get hi-fi sound quality for the same price point, but the ECM-M1 is at best good enough in sound but contains a lot of features that make it easier to use, i.e. turn on the mic and everything just works, and when filming you can really do it conveniently according to the intended purpose, not the orientation of the sound. So this mic is at its best in fast-paced content production when the camera and cameraman are on the move.
You can choose from eight microphone patterns:
You can also set the overall audio recording volume to automatic or adjust it manually.
