Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN II Art (Sony FE) lens

According to Sigma, this is their best 35mm F1.4 lens ever! The fast 35mm is a classic focal length that is perfect for event photography, journalistic photography, and portraits, allowing you to capture a little bit of the environment, making it a truly versatile device.

And Sigma has had a special relationship with this focal length, the first Art series that took the manufacturer's reputation to another level was the 35mm F1.4, this was made into a more compact and lighter DG DN version for mirrorless cameras. This new II improves on both areas again, the image is better and weighs no less than 20% less, so a classic has been made again!

  • Best optical performance in Sigma 35mm F1.4 history
  • 20% lighter and 14% shorter than the previous version
  • Designed for photography and videography
  • Two HLA focus motors and new AAC lens coating
  • Weatherproof construction

The lens is designed for shooting at full aperture and image quality across the frame is good even at F1.4. It includes several special lenses (4 aspherical and two SLD lens elements), which minimize chromatic aberration as much as possible.

For the first time, the new AAC (advanced amorphous coating) lens coating technology is included, which significantly reduces reflections. This means that you will get a high-contrast and clear image without ghosting and reflections, which also promises good results for photographers who use beautiful backlighting.

In addition, coma error has been minimized, meaning stars and point-like lights are drawn nicely in the images. In addition to the technical values, the most important thing, i.e. the feel of the image, is also in order: thanks to the light output and the 11 rounded diaphragm plates, the parts outside the depth of field are drawn beautifully and softly. Careful attention has been paid to the softness of the bokeh, and the most beautiful roundness has been achieved by grinding the aspherical surfaces as precisely as possible. The bokeh remains beautiful even when dimming, meaning the aperture can be chosen according to the content and depth of field requirements.

Faster autofocus

The resolution, video recording and continuous shooting, and focusing speed of today's cameras also create completely new demands on the lens. The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN II features two HLA linear focusing motors, which move the focusing lens group quickly and precisely. The floating focusing group ensures optimal image quality even at different shooting distances and has enabled the lens to be smaller.

For video shooting, the focus works as quietly as possible and has as little focus breathing as possible, i.e. the small but annoying change in focal length as the focus moves. This is important because the camera's internal compensation does not work with third-party lenses.

For manual focus, the lens has a wide and tactile focus.

Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN II vs F1.2

Sigma has an even faster 35mm F1.2 DG DN II lens, which is a great lens, but by tweaking the aperture to a third of the aperture, you get a lighter, smaller and of course cheaper F1.4 version. The 250g weight difference between these is especially noticeable if you have more than one camera and a fixed lens, so this easily adds up to a kilo in the weight of the entire set.

Professional-level usability

The lens also features a focus mode selector and AF-L buttons for locking focus. This can be freely adjusted on Sony bodies for other purposes, such as activating EyeAF focus. There are two switches on this new lens to ensure maximum access to the button.

The aperture ring is lockable and has click settings as well as silent operation for video use.

The structure combines aluminum and Sigma's TSC1 composite material, meaning that it is not only lightweight but also durable and long-lasting.

Designed for professional use, the Sigma 35mm F1.4 is weather and dust-proof. A lens hood is included.
