Sigma's new fast 20mm F1.4 DG DN Art is a completely new lens. Sigma had optics with the same fast speed and focal length designed for SLR cameras, but the name DG DN indicates that this is a lens designed from scratch for mirrorless cameras. Compatible with, for example, Panasonic S5 and Sigma fp cameras.

Sigma's marketing material puts a lot of emphasis on stargazing, but this is a fast and high-definition 20mm lens for everything, from more traditional landscapes to indoor photography and of course video. But if your goal is to shoot night landscapes, starry skies and the northern lights in low light, then you've found the right lens.

Sigma 20mm DG DN in astrophotography

The Sigma 20mm was designed with landscape photography and star photography in mind. In other words, the goal is to achieve the sharpest possible image even at full aperture and at the edges of the image. Unlike portrait photography, these images require good image quality across the entire image area. Performance at full aperture is important because exposure times would be even longer if the lens had to be stopped down.

In addition to straightforward image viewing, the lens has taken into account many things that make the photographer's life easier:

1. Filter thread: The lens has an 82mm filter thread and a gelatin filter holder between the body and the lens. Few lenses of this size have a filter thread, which makes the use of ND filters and polarizing filters easier and more affordable. The lens comes with a gel filter mold, so these can be cut from larger pieces of material.

2. Manual Focus Lock: Manual and autofocus can be locked off. So if the focus is off, press the switch and the focus cannot be moved accidentally in night conditions. No more tape tricks if you use, for example, a Dew heater to prevent fogging.

3. Front design: Sigma's 20mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens has taken into account the defrost heater. A clear space has been left for it and a protrusion has been made on the front edge of the lens to hold the heater collar in place! In addition to winter stargazing, frost can easily surprise those shooting at dawn and dusk. Details like these say a lot about Sigma, now they have listened to the wishes of users.

The aperture ring control switch allows you to choose either the camera's dominant aperture setting, or use the apertures in clear increments, or choose the stepless aperture setting, which is especially useful for video shooting.
