Leica's fantastic telephoto zoom lens for L-Mount compatible cameras. The Leica 90-280mm F2.8-4 is designed with image quality in mind, so it's also a lot of size and weight. The lens offers exceptionally sharp and pleasing images right from full aperture.
It would be wrong to compare this only to 70-200mm lenses because the focal length is more extensive at 280mm, meaning that this replaces even two separate lenses in many applications. From 90mm focal length to 120mm, the lens is at its best in modern portrait photography. Longer focal lengths are suitable for nature photography or details of landscapes and events.
The mechanical quality is of the same clockwork-like precision reference level as the Leica 24-90mm lens. The feel of the adjustment rings is very good. In addition, the Leica 90-280mm is weather and dust-protected. Both the zoom and focus elements move internally, meaning the lens length does not change during use.
The lens has 23 lens elements (in 17 groups), of which seven groups are moving, two focus groups and one acts as an optical stabilizer. Seven of the elements are aberration-correcting. The lens is apochromatically corrected for an unusually good variable focal length telephoto lens.
The lens has a 3.5-stop image stabilizer , which also works in conjunction with the body stabilizer, providing handheld shooting capabilities even in low light.
A tripod collar is included for tripod and monopod use. The collar can be rotated for vertical shots and there is a clear point every 90 degrees, so the camera can be positioned at a right angle to the horizon. The tripod mount can be removed for handheld shooting.
The closest focusing distance is 0.6m at a 90mm focal length and 1.4m at full zoom, meaning detailed images of butterflies, for example, are possible.
