The popular powerhouse Canon G7 X Mark III has a ton of improvements. The optics and usability are still top-notch, but now the video and burst shooting features have been updated in particular:

The Canon G7 X III features a 20-megapixel 1-inch image sensor. The sensor and camera processor have been completely redesigned, enabling 4K video and faster burst shooting.

There are several different options for continuous shooting, 8 frames with autofocus, 20 frames per second with locked focus and up to 30 frames per second using the electronic shutter. Continuous shooting mode also works with RAW images! In addition, the camera has an optional continuous recording mode, where the camera records continuous images and when the shutter button is pressed all the way, 15 frames before pressing and 15 after pressing are saved to the memory card. This feature allows you to record lightning-fast situations at exactly the right moment.

A new boost for videography

The most anticipated feature of the Canon G7 series has been 4K video recording, which is now possible at 25P and 30P frame rates. In addition, Full HD video recording now works at up to 120 fps, so the G7 X III is clearly better at slow-motion videos than its predecessor. Both FullHD and 4K videos are recorded without cropping that changes the focal length.

High-resolution 4K videos can be recorded for 10 minutes at a time, the maximum length of FullHD slow-motion videos is just under 8 minutes. The maximum length of FullHD videos is just under 30 minutes.

The Canon G7 X Mark III can stream video directly to YouTube and works directly with YouTube settings, you can choose a pre-selected broadcast time and name directly from the camera. Video can be sent via Wifi, so you can, for example, connect the camera directly to the network via your phone. If you are doing a longer broadcast, in addition to charging, the camera can be powered directly via the USB-C connection with a power bank.

A big innovation for video recording is the 3.5mm microphone jack. The Canon G7X Mark III is the first camera in this size range to have a microphone jack. This means you can attach a small video microphone like the Rode Videomic Me directly to the camera. Or use the connection rail to attach a slightly larger microphone to the side of the camera. The camera's touchscreen flips all the way forward, making it a great tool for vlogging.

Usability and optics

The Canon G7 X includes a versatile 24-100mm equivalent lens (F1.8-2.8). The lens has a built-in three-aperture ND filter that can be switched on in the settings. The filter is great for long exposures and for video shooting, it allows you to get the exposure time right even in bright conditions.

There is a programmable adjustment ring around the lens, with which you can adjust the aperture, focal length or exposure compensation, for example. There is also a dedicated adjustment wheel for exposure compensation below the shooting mode selection, so you can get the exposure just right with your thumb. There is a small handle on the right side of the camera, which supports one-handed operation.

Low-power Bluetooth and Wifi automatically transfer images directly to your mobile device, and the camera can also be controlled via your phone.
