This lens is surprisingly popular! Why do users of the latest Nikon bodies choose a manual focus lens? The main reason is the image quality or especially the feel. The top-notch F1.2 brightness draws the areas outside the depth of field beautifully and softly.
Technically the image is quite good but at full aperture the image has a bit of a dreamy softness, milder contrast and vignetting. When the mechanical aperture ring is turned to F2 the image becomes sharper and by dimming it gets even closer to flawlessness.
This allows the photographer to choose the aperture to suit the expression.
Especially at full aperture, the depth of field is very small, so you can clearly see what is sharp through the Nikon viewfinder. Of course, for action photography, it is better to take a regular autofocus lens, but for an experienced photographer, manual focus is surprisingly fast. In addition, Voigtlander's experience as a manufacturer is visible, i.e. the mechanical quality, such as the feel of the focus ring, is really good.
There are many other things that can help too!
Focus confirmation: The lens has electronics, meaning aperture information is transmitted to the camera and with Nikon Z series cameras you will see confirmation when the subject within the focus area is correctly focused.
Subject / eye detection: Yes! The camera does not focus on anything itself, but for example with a Nikon ZF / ZR / Z6 III body you can have the camera's focus range move with the subject being photographed and the box delimiting the area turns green when the focus is on point.
Distance markings: The focus ring also has distance markings that enable zone focus techniques, meaning that focus can be estimated in advance at a suitable distance.
Focus peaking: Nikon bodies almost always have Focus Peaking - contour highlighting focusing aid. In addition, most bodies also have a possible body stabilizer to stabilize the image when using this lens.
