The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is a compact, lightweight, high-quality lens for Sony's full-frame cameras and APS-C sensor bodies. Sony's 1.8 aperture telephoto lens is a good combination of brightness and image quality, but the size, weight and price have remained reasonable.

Despite its light weight, the lens's bayonet, body and focus ring are made of metal. The focus ring is suitably damped, meaning manual focusing is also possible. Adjusting the focus from the closest focusing distance to infinity requires turning the focus ring 180 degrees, or half a turn.

Autofocus is fast and silent. In addition to the AF/MF switch, the lens has a focus hold button that locks the lens focus. This button can also be programmed to initiate eye-controlled focus point selection on supported bodies.
