For many, this is the first lens of its kind from Sony: the first F1.2 lens and the first 50mm focal length G Master series lens.

But on the other hand, there is something very familiar here, despite the top-class image quality, the size and weight are under control. So this is very reminiscent of the highly praised 24mm and 35m F1.4 Gmaster lenses. The user interface is also the same, meaning that the aperture can be adjusted using its own control ring, there is an AF Lock button for locking the focus or for example activating EyeAF.

Sony has taken great care in fine-tuning the focus and based on initial experiences, this may be the fastest focusing F1.2 lens from any manufacturer. There are four powerful focus motors, and these drive two separate focusing lens groups.

The depth of field is so small with lenses of this fast speed that focusing accuracy and speed are important. Now AF works great even in video shooting and all the latest focusing features of Sony bodies are supported.

So the focus and sharpness are top-notch. But that's not enough for lenses of this level. In a modern style, the lens structure is complex and contains several special elements. Thanks to these and Sony's latest coating, CA is kept under control and even a little can be removed with one button in Lightroom.

The Nano AR Coating II coating seems particularly effective, there are no distracting reflections when shooting against the light, so you can take advantage of the beautiful light of the mornings and evenings and boldly shoot directly into the light.

The bokeh is soft as it should be, on both sides of the focus area. The lens has 11 rounded diaphragm blades, so the image remains beautiful even at smaller apertures.

According to initial tests, the lens has some focus breathing, which can be significant in video shooting. That is, when the focus changes, the focal length of the image changes slightly. This is visible in the video if you make quick changes to the focus or focus pull tricks. If the subject remains at approximately the same distance, this does not matter.

The Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM is weather-sealed.
