This package includes a compact 16-50mm OSS PZ lens. The lens has image stabilization!
The Sony a6400 replaces the previous a6300 model. The number of megapixels has remained the same, the body has major improvements such as very fast autofocus and 4K video recording without a 30-minute time limit , and the camera's rear screen can be rotated 180 degrees for vlogging. The camera does not have in-body image stabilization like its big brother, the a6600.
The Sony a6400 records images with an APS-C sized image sensor with a resolution of 24.2 megapixels . You can choose the sensitivity between ISO 100-32000 and it is expandable up to ISO 102800. In addition to the improved sensitivity, Sony has changed the color scheme of the camera, now especially skin tones should be recorded better. Taking pictures is also possible using the electronic shutter, in which case the camera is completely silent, meaning that even sensitive animals can be photographed without disturbing them. The continuous shooting speed is 11 frames per second with a normal mechanical shutter and 8fps when using the electronic shutter.
The biggest innovation of the camera is definitely its autofocus. The autofocus speed and especially the tracking of subjects is one of the best on the market in the Sony a6400. The focusing technology is borrowed from Sony's top a9 model. There are 425 phase-detection autofocus points and an additional 425 contrast-based autofocus points.
You can directly select a subject to track from the camera. If the subject is a person, the a6400 will detect the person's face and eyes whenever the subject looks at the camera and change the tracking method to the most effective one. In addition to face detection, autofocus takes into account colors and the distance of the subject. The subject can be almost anything, from a pet to a vehicle to a football.
A free software update will be released in summer 2019 that will make Eye AF autofocus work on animals too! Autofocus also works during continuous shooting, at up to 11 frames per second. The speed of autofocus is particularly useful in a camera in this price range, for example when photographing children and hobbies.
The Sony a6400 records videos in 4K UHD quality with a 100Mbps bitrate. 120P slow-motion videos can also be recorded in FullHD 1080 quality. The previously mentioned fast autofocus also works during video recording. Sony cameras traditionally have comprehensive video features and the a6400 is no exception: there is focus peaking focus assist, zebra overexposure warning, clean HDMI output and a new feature, the Hybrid Log Gamma feature. With HLG, compatible TVs and display devices can display videos with a wide tone range correctly without pre-processing contrast and color saturation.
The camera's touchscreen has a 16:9 aspect ratio, making it ideal for video use. The touchscreen allows you to select the subject you want to focus on by pointing directly at the screen. You can also select the focus point by touching the screen while using the electronic viewfinder. The viewfinder is familiar from the a6500 model and has a resolution of 2.36 million dots.
The body has Micro-HDMI, USB and a 3.5mm miniplug for a microphone. There is no direct headphone connection on the camera, but this is possible with a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. Image transfer and remote control of the camera can be done using a smartphone, with WiFi and NFC for automatic connection creation. The battery can be charged directly on the camera via a USB connection.
The Sony a6400 body is better weather and dust protected than previous models.
