Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art (Sony E) lens

This lens is a completely new DG DN version for mirrorless cameras! The acclaimed 85mm Art has been updated to be even better! Better image quality, significantly smaller and lighter, and weather-protected.

The focal length is the same and the name says Art, but this Sigma 85mm DG DN Art has a new optical design. Of the 15 lens elements, one is aspherical and five are Super Low-Dispersion elements. In addition, there are no fewer than 11 diaphragm blades in the lens and these are rounded in shape, meaning there is a very smooth transition from sharp to blurry areas! This is especially helpful when shooting at medium apertures, for example when blurring the entire face or a couple to make them sharp, the blurry areas are beautifully soft.

The sharpness and beautiful bokeh of the image are therefore in order, but attention has also been paid to minimizing reflections. This is important because with this type of lens you often shoot against the light when the environment is at its most beautiful, i.e. the sun is setting behind the subject.

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN is about three centimeters shorter than the old version. In addition, the weight is almost half of the old lens! This has not been done at the expense of quality, however, the bayonet is brass and the manufacturing material is aluminum and composite in some parts. A large part of this lightening and size reduction is already due to mirrorless cameras because the lens is designed to work much closer to the sensor, meaning that the space required for an adapter is not needed.

Usability

Thanks to its lighter weight and size, the focus is much closer to the camera. Even a lens with this fast aperture is no longer just a must-have studio accessory. Traditionally, the 85mm focal length is called a portrait lens, but especially now, thanks to its better usability, it fits into many camera bags. The good aperture makes low-light photography possible, and the fast focus offers opportunities for photographing animals and sports.

The combination of aperture and focal length also offers great opportunities to influence the expression of the image with a short depth of field. You can extract exactly the details you want from the landscape in your images. The aperture can be adjusted in the traditional way directly from the lens! The adjustment wheel clicks at the third-stop apertures, so you can immediately feel the setting change. Sigma has also invested in video recording, so this mechanical sound can be turned off for video recording, in which case the aperture is adjusted steplessly without noise.

There is an AF-Lock button on the side of the lens to lock focus, but with the new bodies this can be programmed to activate eye focus, for example. According to initial tests, focusing is also faster than in the previous model.

The Sigma 85 f/1.4 DG DN Art is weather-sealed.
