Using a tripod is practically essential: The huge 16x magnification amplifies even the slightest hand shake so strongly that viewing handheld is extremely challenging and tiring. The binoculars are designed to be used from a sturdy base. Attach the binoculars to a tripod or monopod using the separately sold tripod adapter (e.g. Nikon TRA-2 or TRA-3) to keep the image steady and take full advantage of the high magnification.

Maximum magnification

The 16x magnification brings even the most distant objects much closer than traditional binoculars. Despite the high magnification, the Action 16x50 maintains a wide 60.8-degree apparent field of view for its size, making it easier to find objects. A 50mm front lens is required to collect enough light to meet the high magnification level during the day. Nikon's multi-layer coating on the lenses cuts reflections and ensures a clear image.

Attention to eyeglass wearers: This model has a shorter eye relief (13mm) than other models in the series. For this reason, it may be difficult to see the entire field of view with glasses, and viewing is best done without glasses using the adjustable rubber eyecups.
