What do you get when you combine Fuji's best-selling camera, the X100VI, with the superior image quality of a medium format: the Fuji GFX 100RF is a digital camera with a fixed 35mm F4 lens and 102 megapixel resolution. The design and form language are clearly a continuation of the X100VI camera.
No expense has been spared in technology, as this Fuji GFX 100RF now includes the same Fuji's best autofocus as the GFX 100 II. The megapixels are the same crisp 100 and there is also enough dynamics in the image files, meaning that film simulations get the best possible basis and a really good quality file is available for image processing.
The camera has a medium format image sensor , which measures approximately 44x33mm, or 70% larger than a full frame film sensor. Because of this, a 35mm lens corresponds to a focal length of approximately 28mm in a full frame sensor system. This means that the focal length is suitable for a wide range of shooting, landscapes, reportage, and capturing everyday family life, and the camera's incredible resolution enables cropping in a completely new way.
As a comparison, there are more standalone digital cameras than digital SLR cameras, let alone digital cameras of this size! And the size is still only slightly larger than the X100VI, so this is suitable for everyday life, but the image quality is anything but ordinary.
This type of camera may seem familiar to many experienced photographers. In the film era, a small body and very good image quality were often achieved with medium format cameras such as the Mamiya 6, Fuji GA645 or Plaubel Makina.
But the comparison can be taken further, Fuji 6x9 models, or so-called Texas Leicas, Panoramic cameras in both medium format and the classic model Hasselblad X-Pan, which was based on Fuji's TX-1 camera.
All these models and unique aspect ratios have been taken into account! The Fuji GFX 100RF includes its own adjustment wheel for selecting the aspect ratio. Directly on the dial you get X-Pan 65:24, square 1:1 or 6:9 aspect ratios! The adjustment wheel has 9 different aspect ratio settings. Of course, the camera saves full-size files, but you can see the exact crop in the preview.
There are also three different preview options: the crop is shown with a line, the area outside the crop can be black or semi-visible. The last option offers a somewhat rangefinder-like experience, meaning you can see what's outside the frame and react quickly to events and capture crucial moments.
All of this is made possible by the 100-megapixel resolution. In addition to the aspect ratio, the camera also has its own control for cropping, a bit like a digital telephoto extender. There are three settings: 45mm (image size 61MP), 63mm (31.2MP) and 80mm (19.7MP).
So portrait photography is possible, the full color depth and dynamics of the sensor are available, and there are quite a few pixels left. And with this feature, you also get a preview of the entire file and the image outside the crop.
The autofocus is borrowed from Fuji's top-of-the-line GFX 100 II, meaning it features AI-taught object-detection autofocus. The camera recognizes if there is, for example, a bird, car, motorcycle, airplane, or train in the image and locks the focus on it, and continuous focusing is also reliable.
The categories are quite extensive and bird also includes insects and airplane mode includes drones. There is also a general mode for varied shooting. The object-detection autofocus now also works in video shooting.
The Fujifilm GFX 100RF does include traditional face or eye detection focus modes suitable for portrait photography.
Because the same lens is always used, the focus is fine-tuned specifically for this camera.
Focusing is therefore much more advanced than what we are used to in the film era, for example. However, fast-responding and accurate AF is important to get the most out of the camera's sensor resolution.
Weighing just under 735g, the GFX 100RF is lighter with lens than previous Fuji medium format bodies, making it ideal for urban adventures or demanding landscape photography, even while hiking.
The Fuji GFX 100RF is one of Fuji's best in terms of mechanical quality, with both the body and all controls and knobs machined from aluminum. The levers, controls and aperture ring on the lens feel solid and precise.
The GFX 100RF camera's name comes from the word Rangefinder, but instead of a true rangefinder or hybrid viewfinder, it has a 5.76 million-pixel electronic viewfinder. This gives the camera the highest quality viewfinder possible while still keeping the size compact.
Exceptionally, the camera comes with a Fuji filter, 49mm filter adapter, lens hood and braided camera strap! So here is a ready-to-use set. When using the filter, the camera becomes weatherproof.
The same JPG settings as the lighter bodies are included, including 20 film simulations for quick tone adjustments. Fuji's JPG images are highly praised for their tone and quality, meaning you get a ready-to-use image right away. In addition, even if you shoot in RAW format, the film simulations are also used in image processing.
The camera has two SD USH-II memory card slots for unique situations, so you can back up your files while you're shooting.
