The Canon Sumire CN-E is a wide-angle professional cinema lens. Whenever a lens series gets its own name, you know it's a special product.
Especially at full aperture, Sumire's drawing is eye-catching, pleasant and personal. There is enough sharpness from the lens, it has not been corrected with surgical precision. Close-ups of faces are detailed but not brutally revealing, the bokeh and transition outside the depth of field are beautiful and when shooting against backlight, the reflections create a predictable and pleasant flare.
The nature of the image is especially emphasized at full aperture, while dimming makes the image more neutral.
When using Canon Cinema cameras, image vignetting correction also comes into play, and thanks to the electronic connection, the camera displays aperture information in the camera and stores focal length and focus information in metadata.
Focus breathing, which is a disturbing phenomenon in video shooting, is basically completely minimized in these Cinema series lenses. All lenses have 11 rounded diaphragm plates, and the diaphragm adjustment is mechanical and stepless, meaning that adjustment is smooth during shooting.
The usability is the same across the series, meaning the physical size is the same, the lens body size is 114 mm and the filter thread size is 105mm (excluding 14mm which has no filter thread). The aperture ring and focus ring are the same size and the focus ring adjustment range is the same 300 degrees, meaning that you can switch lenses on the fly and the camera settings will remain the same. The feel and response of the focus ring is also identical if the focuspuller is operated manually.
Canon Sumire CN-E lenses are weather and dust sealed.
