Includes the highly versatile new lens Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM
In a nutshell, the difference between the Canon EOS RP and EOS R is similar to the difference between the mirrorless versions EOS 6D Mark II and EOS 5D Mark IV.
The Canon EOS RP is as small as the EOS 800D but contains a 26-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. Thanks to the large sensor, image quality is also good in low light and depth of field control is impressive. The Canon EOS RP has a new RF lens mount. Canon RF lenses are new, modern solutions designed for fully mirrorless cameras. An EF-EOS R adapter is available for the camera, which allows you to use all EF and EF-S compatible lenses. Kameraliike.fi has already had the opportunity to try out the new body, and despite its compact size and lighter weight, the camera feels very sturdy to handle. This is due to the well-designed handle and the high-quality materials and finish. The EOS RP does not include the touch button familiar from the EOS R model, but otherwise the controls are quite similar.
The image sensor is the same as the EOS 6D Mark II, but the microlenses on top of the sensor are optimized for mirrorless cameras. The camera's processor has also been upgraded to the more powerful Digic 8 model. The sensor's maximum sensitivity is ISO 40000 at normal settings and up to 102400 at extended settings.
The Canon EOS RP features the acclaimed Dual Pixel AF focusing system. Dual Pixel AF works for both video and still images. Fortunately for videographers, the focus is continuous and can also be controlled from the touchscreen by tapping on the subject. The Canon EOS RP also includes EyeAF focusing , which keeps the focus on the subject's eyes. The focus is also continuous and tracks the subject, so you can reliably get correctly focused portraits even in difficult situations!
Because Dual Pixel AF works at the sensor level, it is also very accurate, achieving perfect focus even with very fast lenses with very shallow depth of field. Autofocus works reliably even in low light (down to -5EV at F1.2).
Dual Pixel AF enables a huge number of focus points, the Canon EOS RP has 4799 focus points and they cover about 90% of the image area. The Canon EOS RP also includes a programmable focus bracketing feature , the camera takes up to 999 images with different focus settings. These images can then be assembled into a macro or landscape image that is perfectly sharp at all distances using Canon Digital Professional Pro software.
The Canon EOS RP records 4K videos using a cropped part of the sensor, so the focal length changes when shooting in 4K. FullHD 1080 60P videos are recorded using the entire frame. Dual Pixel AF is only used in FullHD shooting, while the more robust Canon EOS R also uses this in 4K settings. In tests, the camera has seemed to last quite well when shooting videos, after about an hour of 4K shooting, the battery still had half of its charge left. For video shooting, the camera has a microphone jack and a headphone jack for monitoring sound.
Despite the large sensor, the body is light and compact: the weight with memory card and battery is 485 grams. The touchscreen is 3" in size and also flips forward for vlogging, for example. The electronic viewfinder contains 2.36 million pixels. The Canon EOS RP includes one fast UHS-II SD memory card slot. The camera's battery type is the LP-E17 used in several Canon models.
