The Canon EOS R6 II has been the manufacturer's most popular full-frame camera since its launch. The camera has been the choice of even demanding photographers and professionals for nature, sports, events and weddings. Canon asked users how they could improve their favorite even further and these wishes have been answered: a completely new 32.5 megapixel sensor, better burst shooting and even faster autofocus, as well as amazing video recording capabilities.

The Canon EOS R6 III is a well-balanced combination of resolution and speed. Speed ??means up to 40fps burst shooting for 1000 RAW images, advanced focusing, and image size, meaning that the excessive image size does not slow down processing.

This is also a very important model for Canon and you can see it in the small improvements in detail that you can appreciate a lot when shooting. The body has a slightly new kind of stability and the menu systems have been tuned. The goal is that those who have photographed with previous versions feel at home and on the other hand are excited about the new possibilities offered by the technology.

  • All-new 32.5 megapixel sensor
  • 40 fps silent continuous shooting, 12 fps with mechanical shutter. AF works in both
  • RAW Burst continuous shooting with pre-recording and video with 5-second pre-recording
  • Body Stabilizer: Up to 8.5 f-stop stabilization
  • Dual Pixel AF II autofocus
  • Focus that recognizes and follows animals, people, and, for example, flying birds
  • Now also vehicle identification and tracking: cars, motorcycles, trains and airplanes
  • 7K 60P RAW video directly to memory card
  • Open Gate video, waveform exposure assist, tally lamp
  • UVC webcam streaming directly via USB cable
  • 1x CFExpress and 1x UHS-II SDXC memory card slots

New 32.5 megapixel sensor

The sensor and the technology around it are new, but the same combination is used in the slightly earlier Canon EOS C50 Cinema camera, and based on initial tests, this is a very good choice. It is not a so-called stacked sensor like in the EOS R1 and EOS R5 II bodies, but according to the technical data, there is still enough speed.

The biggest improvement over the previous version is the better resolution, but the pixel count has been increased moderately, so nothing has had to be cut from the burst shooting capabilities. The higher resolution allows for larger prints and cropping. For example, with an APS-C size of 1.6x crop, the image size is 12.7 megapixels and the camera works really smartly in this mode, meaning the viewfinder image is enlarged to match the crop and you can take pictures for much longer compared to full size.

We're looking forward to detailed tests, but based on the C50 film camera, the image dynamics seem to be good. Sensitivity is adjustable in extended mode up to ISO 102400.

Around the sensor is IBIS, or image stabilization that moves the sensor. Now the maximum power has been updated and the stabilization power is up to 8.5 f-stops in the center and up to 7.5 f-stops at the edges of the image. The image stabilization also follows the subject, meaning the stabilization is focused just right. The power also depends on the lens used, meaning the stabilization also works seamlessly with the lens's image stabilization.

Raw power for serialization & larger buffer memory

The Canon EOS R6 III, like its predecessors, is a recorder of fast and unique situations. The continuous shooting capabilities are better, even though the resolution of the images is higher, and this is partly explained by the faster CFExpress memory card. The amount of buffer, i.e. the number of images that can be taken in a row, has increased significantly, from about 100 RAW images to over a thousand, and when shooting with an electronic shutter, it has doubled!

  • Continuous shooting with mechanical shutter 12 fps (1000+ JPG / RAW images on CFEpress card, 400 RAW images on SDXC card)
  • Continuous shooting with electronic shutter 40 fps (for 150 RAW images)
  • Raw Burst 40FPS pre-recording for 0.3 or 0.5 seconds
  • Improved sensor read speed with electronic shutter
Burst shooting of 20 images even before the picture is taken. By activating this H+ mode when pressing the shutter button, a series of images are recorded in advance for 0.5 seconds, meaning that 20 RAW images (or JPEG /HEIF) are already stored at the moment the picture is taken! This feature makes it possible to record very fast events, just the right moment when a bird catches a fish or a sports performance in the perfect position.

The feature creates a single file that can be browsed through like a slow-motion video on a camera, and from this, single images can be saved in Raw or JPG quality.

Canon EOS R6 III - Fierce autofocus

In short, the Canon EOS R6 III features the manufacturer's latest autofocus technology. In practice, the performance is at least the same as the Canon EOS R5 II camera, and in some cases even goes to the level of the R1 and beyond.

The camera features the familiar Dual Pixel AF II and Deep Learning, the latest algorithms trained to be effective with example images. The Canon EOS R6 Mark III recognizes people, dogs, cats and birds, horses and vehicles such as cars, motorcycles and airplanes. Object recognition is used to help focus and track.

Focus and tracking are based on the entire figure, head, face and eyes, depending on how the subject is positioned in the image. Focus also recognizes faces that are off to the side.

You can also store images of 100 people in the Canon EOS R6 III's memory, and you can always select a maximum of 10 people at the same time with the Register People Priority function, meaning that the camera will automatically focus on the so-called most important people, for example during parties and events ! Reference images can be taken from a computer screen, for example.

These intelligent focus modes cover 100% of the image area, meaning there are no problems tracking subjects between focus points or at the edges of the frame. And there are a lot of pixels that handle focus, now 6097 in the III version, and these operate with the same accuracy and speed all around the sensor.

The same focusing features are also used in video recording.

Canon EOS R6 III vs. EOS R6 II

Canon EOS R6 III video shooting - film camera technology

  • 7K RAW 60P video recording (RAW Light, RAW Standard at 30P)
  • Open Gate video shooting, also with RAW Light 30P setting
  • 4K 120P and FullHD 180P
  • 4-channel audio recording
  • Storing metadata and smaller proxy files
  • No 30 minute time limits
  • Focus Breathing compensation in the camera
  • False color and waveform, easy exposure adjustment
  • Microphone and headphone jacks
  • Full-size HDMI connection
  • Canon Log 3, and Canon Log with 4:2:2 10-bit recording
  • UVC streaming via USB cable without separate devices
  • Also starting video recording 5 seconds in advance!
  • All AF features also work in video recording
  • Tally light
As mentioned, the Canon EOS R6 III contains the same technology as the Cinema-line series Canon EOS C50, which means the video quality should be okay! The difference is certain connections and, for example, thermal management, but the EOS R6 III can be the main video production device for many and is really great if you want to combine still images and video shooting in the same camera.

The biggest upgrade is the 7K raw video recording , with a maximum bitrate of 2600Mbps, meaning the data rates are possible for CFExpress cards. In the slightly lighter RAW Light setting, 60P is also possible.

Another highly desired innovation is Open Gate shooting , meaning that the video image is recorded from the entire sensor area, also in the vertical direction. This 3:2 aspect ratio material makes it easier to create your own versions during the editing phase, for example for YouTube and with a vertical crop for Tiktok. Open gate mode also helps when shooting with anamorphic lenses.

On the other hand, if the number one channel is Tiktok, then by rotating the camera to a vertical position, the user interface will also rotate, meaning the camera is well suited for modern content production.

With the increased resolution, the video is also created using oversampling technology, meaning that a larger 7K pixel count is used to create a 4K video file with more precision and less noise. The sensor speed is reflected in a smaller rolling shutter effect in fast movements.

On the other hand, the camera is also suitable for longer shooting sessions; if oversampling is turned off, the recording time for 4K 25P video is up to six hours!

It includes Focus breathing compensation, which has been praised in Sony bodies, meaning that when you change the focus, the image size does not change disturbingly. In addition, a False color tool borrowed from film cameras has been added, which shows midtones and clipping highlights in different colors. This helps you adjust the exposure manually precisely. There is also a waveform tool for image analysis.

To make workflow easier, the camera can now store smaller proxy files and metadata.

Highly effective stabilization, 4K video without time limit and Dual Pixel AF II focus make this camera a great option for professional production. The same camera can handle demanding sports photography and Run&Gun style video shooting.

What about those quick situations? Pre-recording also works for video recording! Press Rec and up to five seconds of material is already recorded.

Usability

  • Weatherproof body
  • Slightly sturdier and more robust construction - you can tell when holding it in your hand
  • Movie Switch selection between video and still mode
  • Joystick and thumbwheel plus two selection wheels
  • Apple MFI support
  • Multi Function smart shoe
  • 1 CFExpress memory card slot and 1 UHS-II SDXC memory card slot
  • Charging via USB-C cable
  • New Camera Connection App

Anyone who has shot with the previous versions will immediately notice a slightly sturdier construction, the weight change has remained within a few tens of grams but the camera feels mechanically more durable. The design has also seen some minor improvements over time, and it is a camera that really fits in the hand and can handle even the toughest of situations.

Now included are CFExpress and SDXC memory card slots. CFExpress is a good card type, i.e. mechanically durable and allows the camera to achieve the speeds required for burst shooting and video files. You can change how the card slots are used in the settings, i.e. whether backups, smaller video files are saved to another, etc.

Like Canon, the menus are clear and now include a bit more customization options for things like focus settings.

The multi-function hot shoe is familiar from the EOS R3 model and is compatible with Canon's new flashes and accessories. Older flashes can be attached with an adapter as needed.

Like the previous model, the camera features Focus Bracketing, handheld panoramic shots and even with the camera held upright without restrictions, multiple exposures directly in the camera, and autofocus area limits.

The weather protection is on par with the previous model, making it suitable for travel use in the Finnish countryside.
