" Veikko Salmela's (b. 1930) basic elements are stone and water. Stone as a profession, as a stonecutter. Water as a hobby and as an enrichment of free time, mainly in the form of canoeing. The stonecutter is now 81 years old. He is the fifth generation leader of the Central Finland Stone Company. He is assisted by two related sons.

The Finnish Canoe Association has awarded Veikko the title of canoeing advisor. There are ten advisors in Finland in total. The award has come from a successful racing career and diligent work for the Mikkelin Melojat ry.

Veikko has always been interested in self-expression. As a young man, he completed the correspondence school ABC drawing school, which also laid a solid foundation for his photography practice. This work was created from material that is not limited to images: Veikko's recorded poems, songs, memoirs and sketchbooks have been the raw materials for the book.

"Some weekends, when work finished on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., I would eat, then go canoeing on Lake Saimaa. It was 40 km. And on Sunday, the same run, a total of 80 km. That's five."

Veikko Salmela is the Stoneman. He walks on the waters.
